Head of Media & Communications

Professional Football Club | North East of England

Sporting Jobs are working with a professional football club based in the North East of England to appoint a Head of Media and Communications.

This is a senior, hands-on leadership role for someone ready to:

  • Own the voice of the club
  • Build a high-performance media operation
  • Foster connections between the club and its passionate football community

The Role

  • Reports to: Commercial & Operations Director
  • Responsible for full ownership of the club’s media and communications function, covering:
    • Day-to-day content creation and digital output
    • Strategic narrative development
    • Media relations
    • Matchday operations

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the media team (staff, freelancers, and volunteers)
  • Develop and execute a communications strategy aligned with club objectives and/or tone of voice
  • Ensure matchday media operations (home and away fixtures) meet aggressive standards
  • Manage all media relations, including local, regional, and national press
  • Oversee content across:
    • Social media
    • Club website
    • All digital channels
  • Support commercial partners through tailored content and campaign delivery
  • Provide advice and counsel to senior leadership on sensitive or high-profile matters
  • Ensure broad, visible coverage of Men’s, Women’s, and Academy teams
  • Monitor performance metrics across media and digital activity, with regular leadership reporting

What We’re Looking For

Essential

  • Extensive media, communications, or content experience in professional sport (or similarly fast-paced sector)
  • Proven ability to deliver high-quality content across:
    • Video
    • Photography
    • Digital platforms
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • Social media trends
    • Content strategy
    • Audience engagement
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to thrive under pressure, juggle multiple priorities efficiently, and make confident decisions
  • Full UK driving licence (matchday travel mandatory)
  • Availability for:
    • Attending home fixtures
    • Travel to away fixtures

Desirable

  • Previous line management experience
  • Experience in a professional football setting (e.g., National League/Premier League)
  • Hands-on experience with:
    • Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere Pro, Photoshop)
    • Canva or related content tools
  • Experience supporting commercial partnerships through custom content
  • Degree in:
    • Media
    • Communications
    • Journalism
    • (Or related discipline)

The Package

  • Salary based on experience level
  • TOIL (Time-Off-In-Lieu) system to account for fixture commitments (matchday/evening travel)
