The Opportunity

We’re seeking a Head of Model Use (Capital Modelling), responsible for propelling strategic model adoption, ensuring Economic Capital Model (ECM) is central to decision-making, risk management, and partnership across our EO Division. This is a high-visibility post that bridges analysis and action, allowing you to influence how QBE allocates capital and drives business strategy.

Scope: Your work will champion capital models across Senior Leadership, FAL (Frontline ALM), and the wider QBE Group. You’ll upgrade capital governance, model sophistication, leadership, and team performance.

Your Core Responsibilities

Strategic Model Use & Capital Insight

  • Maintain EO’s management perspective on the ECMs to reflect QBE’s evolving risk portfolio.
  • Embed the ECM anywhere capital decisions are made, reinforcing risk consistency across submissions and major transactions.
  • Lead capital optimisation for the QBE Division, advising on:
    • Portfolio efficiency
    • Capital intensity ratios
    • Project capital implications (EO and Group-wide)
  • Drive collaborative ECM use in Sub1 (business planning) and Sub2 (submit to regulators) scenarios.
  • Align capital insights with Reinsurance strategies, ensuring optimal yield and coverage.

Capital Allocation & Transactions

  • Uphold robust capital allocation methodologies with the Head of Capital Business Partnering.
  • Elevate stakeholder awareness of Return on Allocated Capital (RoAC) principles across EO and FAL.
  • Assess capital impacts for critical business moves:
    • Loss Portfolio Transfers (LPTs)
    • Mergers/acquisitions and disposals
  • Steer fiancial prudence in matters like commutations, reinsurance optimisation, and capital-decision processes.

Regulatory Compliance & Forecasting

  • Own regulatory capital forecasts, supporting remittance and capital planning.
  • Refine capital forecasting tools and methodologies.
  • Enforce rigorous risk frameworks and peer reviews to enhance robust, model-based governance.

Governance, Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Preside over the FAL Monthly Model Use Working Group, advancing the operational and strategic capabilities of models.
  • Cultivate partnership with QBE Group-wide stakeholders, delivering value across Front Line Asset/Liability Management and stakeholders EO.
  • Lead your team with purpose, ensuring personal development and high performance tht aligns with our business goals.

About You

Essential Qualifications

  • Tertiary degree (or equivalent combination of education and work experience).
  • Actuarial certification: Fellowship (FIA or FCAS).

Key Experience & Capabilities

  • Fully qualified actuary, with deep General Insurance experience.
  • Extensive capital modelling or management experience in the Gen Ins market.
  • Strong team leadership and stakeholder management at senior levels.
  • Technical mastery of:
    • Excel (advanced), PowerPoint
    • SQL, VBA
    • Capital Models (Preference for Igloo but open to platform experience).
  • Commercial acumen and the ability to shape strategic decisions.
  • Recognised as a process leader capable of delivering crystal-clear, high-impact analysis.
  • Notable in problem-solving, linguistic clarity (written and oral), and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Competent in navigating high-stake environments with senior executives and industry leaders.
