About the Role

Help us create a better future, quicker. The Head of OCC System Operability is a newly created role in the Operational Control Centre (OCC) with the key focus of working alongside other directorates to:

  • Ensure a seamless environment for the use of flex contracts and DSO (Distribution System Operator) interactions in a real-time environment.
  • Maintain the efficient operation of the distribution network.
  • Support the uptake and use of the SCADA platform and supporting products/tools for seamless service delivery to customers.

This role is critical as the growth required to deliver on commitments and meet Great Britain’s net zero pathway demands the Operational Control Centre understands transitions, including adapting processes and requirements from system operators like National Electricity Transmission Operator (NESO), government agencies, and in the transition towards becoming a DSO. The aim is to minimise the impact of any change in systems on end customers.

You will have responsibility over multiple strategic aspects, including:

  • Formulating future strategy at all voltage levels.
  • Leading technology deployment and development.
  • Overseeing IT deliveries, staff upskilling, and organisational futuring.
  • Managing safety, system integrity, customer service, and coordinating system access.
  • Ensuring compliance with licencing and stakeholder objectives.
  • Mentoring team members and fostering a strong organisational culture.

Key accountable priorities include:

  • Minimising risks to the SPM network by coordinating with District Operations management.
  • Ensuring planned and unplanned work is executed timeously, cost-effectively, and with correct priorities.
  • Guaranteeing the Control Room operates at highest levels of Safety Compliance and Customer Service, aligning with SPEN’s strategic goals.
  • Developing policies and strategies for system restoration activities.
  • Collaborating closely with industry stakeholders like Health and Safety Executive (HSE), DESNZ, OFGEM, National Grid ESO (NGET), and other Distribution Network Operators (DNOs).
  • Representing SPM’s interests in Government-led Industry Groups.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
