Head of Operations - Renewables

Location: Hybrid WFH/attend meetings at UK HQ and regular UK travel to client site

Salary: Competitive + LTIP + bonus/commission + car allowance/company vehicle

Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 5:30pm (flexibility required)

Holiday: 28 days including bank holidays

About the Role

Our client is seeking an experienced Head of Operations/ Director of Renewables to lead and grow its expanding renewables division. This is a senior leadership position within an electrical contractor with full responsibility for the commercial performance, operational delivery, and strategic growth of a national renewables business.

The successful candidate will lead the delivery of renewable energy projects across commercial, industrial, and public sector clients, including Solar PV, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), EV Charging Infrastructure, Building-as-a-Grid solutions, grid connections and renewable operations & maintenance (O&M).

This role offers the opportunity to shape strategy, develop new service offerings, build high-performing teams, and drive sustainable business growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the Renewables division with full P&L responsibility.
  • Develop and deliver the divisional growth strategy across existing and emerging renewable technologies.
  • Oversee the successful delivery of renewable projects and O&M contracts, ensuring safety, quality, profitability, and customer satisfaction.
  • Drive business development, tender strategy, and commercial negotiations to secure profitable growth.
  • Build, lead, and develop a high-performing operational, electrical engineering, civils, and commercial team.
  • Establish robust governance, reporting, KPIs and operational processes.
  • Manage key client, supplier, and stakeholder relationships.
  • Ensure compliance with UK health & safety legislation, quality standards and industry regulations.
  • Develop strategic partnerships with OEMs, subcontractors, and supply chain partners.

About You

You will have:

  • Proven senior leadership experience within the renewables, energy, electrical contracting, utilities, or M&E sectors.
  • Strong commercial acumen with demonstrable P&L ownership.
  • Experience delivering large-scale renewable energy projects and/or O&M services.
  • A successful track record of growing business units, developing new markets and leading operational teams.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and negotiation skills.
  • Strong leadership qualities with the ability to inspire, develop and retain high-performing teams across Civils, Installation Electricians, Planned & Preventative Maintenance (PPM) Electricians, Project Managers, Contract Managers and Schedulers.
  • A full UK driving licence.
  • An electrical qualification/background.

Project governance, contract management and commercial risk

UK construction health & safety and CDM regulations

Desirable: renewables-specific training/competence across Solar PV, EV charging, BESS, monitoring/O&M; familiarity with quality and certification frameworks used in the UK renewables market.

What Success Looks Like

During your first year you will:

  • Complete existing renewables projects to achieve revenue targets set.
  • Establish a scalable operating model with clear governance and KPIs.
  • Improve financial performance through effective forecasting, margin control and commercial management.
  • Grow the renewables pipeline and successfully convert new business opportunities.
  • Strengthen operational delivery across projects and maintenance services.
  • Build strategic supplier relationships and expand service offerings into new sectors.
  • Develop a high-performing, safety-first culture across the division.
