Head of Operations – AFC Wimbledon

About the Role: The Headlines We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Head of Operations to oversee and manage critical aspects of Cherry Red Records Stadium and Training Ground operations, delivering safe and successful major matchdays and events.

The role manages a blend of in-house and outsourced services, including:

  • In-house team: Maintenance (2), Security (2), Health & Safety (1), Reception (1), and IT Team (2)
  • Outsourced services:
    • Grounds maintenance (hybrid: Sports Turf International and one club-employed Grounds person)
    • Catering (Aramark UK)
    • Stadium security (Amity + additional supplier)
    • Stadium presentation (Cirka)
    • Various trusted partners for supplies, cleaning, and other services

The Head of Operations coordinates major matchdays (~40/year for AFC Wimbledon men’s/women’s teams, rugby, and American football) and oversees stadium operations year-round. The role supports the club’s Development Committee, reports to the Managing Director, and collaborates with key internal partners:

  • Director of Football, Commercial Team, Marketing Team, Catering GM
  • External partners like London Broncos and Chelsea Women F.C.
  • Safety Advisory Group, MET Police, Merton Council, and local resident groups

Club Strategy & Alignment

  • Align operational strategies with AFC Wimbledon’s long-term mission and stadium vision.
  • Ensure event/ground hire seamless planning and execution for client satisfaction.

Operational Management

  • Coordinate stadium and training ground operations, ensuring compliance with regulations.
  • Maintain standards across facilities, services, and events.

Team Leadership

  • Lead (2+ staff in-house + subcontractors), provide guidance, and foster a culture of accountability.
  • Perform performance evaluations and career development support.

Contract & Partner Relations

  • Oversee catering, security, grounds, cleaning, waste management, pest control, IT systems, and other vendor agreements.
  • Manage relationships with external partners (e.g., Aramark, Amity, Cirka + sport teams/leagues).

Facilities & Grounds

  • Supervise maintenance teams to sustain stadium assets, following SFG20 compliance.
  • Ensure playing pitches, training grounds, and all areas meet optimal conditions.

Safety & Health

  • Enforce health/safety policies and conduct regular audits.
  • Work with statutory bodies (MET Police, council) and ensure PPM, COSHH, and facilities regulations compliance.

Event Execution

  • Collaborate with event coordinators to manage logistics, crowd control, staffing.
  • Prevent scheduling conflicts for smooth operation.

Budget & Financial Oversight

  • Develop, monitor, and control budgets for operations.
  • Lead capital project planning, contractor performance, and vendor negotiations.
  • Serve as CAPEX budget holder for stadium upgrades.

Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Engage with vendors, contractors, local authorities, and external organisations.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify sustainability and innovation opportunities for operational efficiency.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Experience: 5+ years in stadium/large event venue operations, including outsourced contract oversight (catering, cleaning, security).
  • Education: Bachelor’s in Business Administration/Operations/Facility Management (preferred) or equivalent experience.
  • Leadership: Proven ability to manage teams, delegate effectively, and balance multiple priorities.
  • Technical Skills: Knowledge of financial systems, health/safety policies, facility management software, IT/security protocols.
  • Financial Acumen: Budget development, adherence, and P&L management.
  • Problem-Solving: Agility in resolving operational challenges.
  • Customer Focus: Demonstratable heed to visitor/stakeholder needs.
  • Flexibility: Willingness to work evenings/weekends for matchdays/events.
  • Physical Ability: Mobility across stadium spaces.
