Senior Technical Price Leader / Director of Pricing (UK)

Working Hours

This role is available on a part-time, job-share, or full-time basis.

Location

You can be based out of our London, Birmingham, or Aspden (whitley) office with regular travel to our London office.

The Opportunity

This is a pivotal leadership opportunity focused on ensuring that pricing remains a technical differentiator and a clear driver of:

  • Underwriting performance
  • Profitable growth
  • Business plan delivery

Across one of the UK’s largest insurance businesses.

Key Responsibilities

  • Report directly to the UK Chief Underwriting Officer and operate as a key member of the Underwriting Leadership Team.
  • Lead a pricing function of around 50 colleagues, setting technical standards, methodologies, tools, and operating rhythms that convert pricing expertise into:
    • Robust pricing insight
    • Independent challenge
    • Measurable business value

This role is central to leveraging advanced pricing capability as a strategic differentiator within the business.

Core Duties

  • Work closely with underwriting, distribution, and finance leaders to provide:

    • Objective pricing adequacy assessments
    • Strategic recommendations on rate strength, model enhancements, and performance drivers
    • Clear translations of complex analyses to actionable recommendations, supporting:
      • Trading decisions
      • Remediation strategies
      • Organic growth initiatives
  • Ensure pricing function evolves as a technical centre of excellence, fostering:

    • Team development (capability, accountability, succession planning)
    • Prioritisation of high-value business areas
    • Adherence to Technical Actuarial Standards (TAS), regulatory, and Consumer Duty requirements
  • Maintain commercial judgment while providing:

    • Influential technical challenge in time-sensitive underwriting contexts
    • Business alignment for underwriting, finance, and distribution partnerships

    • Underwriting performance
    • Profitable growth

  • Shape a futures-focused pricing strategy, directing:
    • Tool optimisation and AI implementation
    • Innovation in advanced analytics
    • Market trend awareness and responsiveness

Technical Leadership

  • Build and enhance pricing governance, standards, and frameworks, ensuring:
    • Methodologies are robust, calibrated, compliant with TAS regulations

  • Provide independent, commercially grounded challenge on:
    • Pricing adequacy
    • Model outputs
    • Portfolio decisions
  • Distill complex technical insights into actionable business recommendations, improving:

    • Appetite management

Cross-Functional Impact

  • Collaborate with distribution, underwriting, and finance leaders to ensure:
    • Objective pricing insights support business objectives without overstepping portfolio ownership boundaries
  • Drive adoption of pricing actions, tracking the measurable, tangible business outcome from pricing recommendations.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Deliver high-performance pricing teams, improving:
    • Standards of excellence
    • Prioritisation discipline
    • Succession planning
    • Budget accountability
  • Lead as a leverage ingredient in the Underwriting Leadership Team, shaping future underwriting & pricing effectiveness.

What Are We Looking For?

Technical & Analytical Expertise

  • Profound experience in pricing methodologies, model calibration, rate adequacy, and pricing governance
  • Proven ability to convert numerical analysis into clear business recommendations

Strategic & Influential Capacity

  • Strong senior stakeholder influence, balancing technical credibility with credible challenge
  • Comfort in steering complex commercial decisions with imperfect data

Leadership & Team Dynamics

  • History of teambuilding and high-performing culture in technical/analytical roles
  • Accountable, purposeful leadership in matrix environments

Communication & Commercial Persuasion

  • Excellent ability to:
    • Distill jargon-laden analysis into actionable insights
    • Adapt language for internal/external stakeholders

Priority & Delivery Focus

  • Mastery in prioritising high-value technical activities during trading cycles
  • Adept at margin specification and trade-offs in dynamic corporate contexts
