Director of Pricing – Underwriting Leadership Team
Working Arrangements
This role is available on a part-time, job-share, or full-time basis.
- Location: Primarily based in London, Birmingham, or Whitely, with regular travel to the London office required.

About the Role
This is a pivotal leadership opportunity to ensure pricing remains a technical differentiator that drives underwriting performance, profitable growth, and business plan delivery within the UK’s largest insurance business.
Reporting directly to the UK Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO), you will:
- Lead a 50-strong pricing function.
- Set technical standards, methodologies, tools, and operational frameworks to transform pricing expertise into robust insights, independent challenges, and measurable business value.
- Shape pricing as a strategic differentiator, collaborating closely with underwriting, distribution, finance, and senior business leaders to provide objective pricing adequacy assessments, rate strength evaluations, technical model enhancements, and performance drivers.
- Translate complex analyses into clear recommendations supporting trading strategies, remediation actions, and growth decisions.
- Develop the pricing function as a technical centre of excellence, enhancing capability, accountability, prioritisation, and succession planning while ensuring alignment with maximising business value.

Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership of Pricing Function:
- Drive pricing strategy across the UK, aligning tools, models, and innovation with market trends and emerging techniques.
- Integrate AI, advanced analytics, and technology into pricing methodologies while maintaining compliance with Technical Actuarial Standards (TAS) and regulatory expectations.

Technical and Methodological Ownership:
- Evolve analytical frameworks, pricing models, and governance to ensure validation, regulatory compliance (including Consumer Duty standards) and effective calibration of modelled and non-modelled pricing.
- Oversee ** consumption of technical pricing data** for underwriting decisions, including rate adequacy, portfolio performance.

Business Influence & Recommendations:
- Provide independent pricing insights to guide trading, remediation, growth, and appetite management.
- Receive complex technical matters into clear, actionable recommendations for senior stakeholders.

Stakeholder Collaboration:
- Strengthen partnerships with underwriting, finance, and distribution leaders to deliver operational visibility through metrics, insights, and target actions*.
- Maintain clear boundaries between pricing accountability and portfolio decisions.

Performance Delivery:
- Ensure technical pricing insights translate into real business impact, measurable outcomes, and value realisation through performance cycles.
- Combine technical authority and commercial judgement for critical pricing decisions, often with incomplete data.

Team Development:
- Lead and develop a high-performing pricing team, establishing capability standards, accountability, and investments in succession planning.
- Responsible for budget management of the function.

Role in Underwriting Leadership:
- Contribute to business performance strategy as a member of the Underwriting Leadership Team, driving underwriting and pricing effectiveness.
Requirements
Technical & Professional Skills
- Deep expertise in pricing methodologies, rate adequacy, and analytical frameworks.
- Strong background in technical pricing, financial models, or related quantitative fields.
- Ability to translate technical insights into clear business recommendations* for stakeholders.
Leadership & Influence
- Proven experience influencing senior leaders in matrix organisations while preserving technical rigor.
- Experience in leadingAnalytical credibility with the confidence to challenge pricing or strategic decisions as needed.
- Capability to prioritise initiatives based on business value and deliver under pressure.
Team & Stakeholder Management
- Track record in building high-performing analytical and technical teams, with stronger accountability and career development.
- Effectiveness in influencing decision-making without direct authority, balancing gradual importance with commercial appeals.
- Strong relational leadership skills demonstrating collaboration beyond direct teams.
Personal Attributes
- Commercial acumen: Ability market-pricing complexities with sound assumptions and choices.
