About the Role
We’re looking for a Head of Production to lead train maintenance operations at our Ardwick depot, ensuring the safe, efficient and reliable delivery of customer service commitments. Leading a team of Production Managers, you’ll drive operational performance, resource planning, continuous improvement and health and safety excellence. With responsibility for contracts worth approximately £40m in annual revenue and budgetary control of around £3.5m, this role is critical in delivering operational excellence and supporting business success.
You’ll make a difference by…
- Leading the safe and efficient delivery of train maintenance operations, ensuring depot production targets, train availability and reliability commitments are consistently achieved.
- Building strong customer relationships, proactively managing customer requirements, resolving operational issues and identifying opportunities to enhance service delivery and business growth.
- Overseeing production planning activities, ensuring short, medium and long-term maintenance plans are delivered effectively and supported by the timely provision of materials, resources and services.
- Managing operational performance and budgets, ensuring contractual obligations are met, resources are optimised and financial targets are achieved.
- Driving a culture of health, safety and wellbeing, ensuring compliance with company policies, promoting safe working practices and putting employee welfare at the heart of decision-making.
- Leading, developing and inspiring high-performing teams, fostering employee engagement, capability development, succession planning and a culture of accountability and continuous learning.
- Championing continuous improvement and operational excellence, using Lean methodologies and improvement programmes to enhance productivity, quality, efficiency and overall depot performance.

Essential
What you’ll need to succeed...
- HND, HNC or equivalent qualification in an engineering, manufacturing, maintenance or operational management discipline, or significant relevant experience.
- Experience within the rail industry, with technical knowledge of rolling stock maintenance and production operations.
- Proven experience leading and engaging technical or operational teams within a fast-paced, time-critical environment.
- Demonstrable experience of managing organisational change and employee relations matters.
- Strong knowledge of continuous improvement methodologies, with a track record of delivering operational improvement projects and driving change.
- Good understanding of health and safety legislation, with experience implementing safe systems of work in a safety-critical environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret performance data and develop meaningful management information.
- Proficient IT skills, including the ability to develop, analyse and interpret spreadsheets and operational reports.
Preferred
- Degree-level qualification in Engineering, Operations Management, Manufacturing, Maintenance or a related discipline.
- Professional membership of a recognised leadership or engineering body (e.g. ILM, IMechE, IET).
- Basic project management qualification or experience supporting the delivery of improvement and change initiatives.
