Head of Quality and Business Performance
About The Role
Job Title: Head of Quality and Business Performance
Location: Scotland / Flexible (Central Belt / North of Scotland)
Company: Balfour Beatty – Regional Scotland
Working pattern: Flexible working, with travel to projects across Scotland
Lead Quality. Influence Change. Improve Performance.
Balfour Beatty is looking for a dynamic, confident and highly influential Head of Quality and Business Performance to shape and lead our quality strategy across Regional Scotland.
This is a senior, visible position for someone who is comfortable challenging established ways of working, engaging with senior stakeholders and driving accountability across complex projects and frameworks.
You could currently be working within a Tier 1 or Tier 2 contractor, construction consultancy, engineering organisation, infrastructure business or the oil and gas sector. Your background is important, but your ability to lead, influence and bring people with you will be equally critical.
You will champion a Right First-Time culture, ensuring that quality is embedded throughout the business rather than treated simply as a compliance exercise.
What you'll be doing
Key Responsibilities
As our Head of Quality and Business Performance, you will:
- Lead the quality strategy and promote a Right First Time approach across Regional Scotland.
- Develop, implement and continually improve our Quality Management System.
- Ensure compliance with ISO 9001, ISO 55001 and relevant client, regulatory and industry requirements.
- Lead quality audits, inspections, management reviews and improvement programmes.
- Analyse project and business performance data, identifying trends, risks and opportunities.
- Develop meaningful performance metrics, dashboards and reports for the Senior Leadership Team.
- Lead investigations into quality incidents and ensure lessons learned result in lasting improvements.
- Work closely with operational, commercial, design, technical and work-winning teams.
- Represent Regional Scotland at client meetings, quality forums and wider business workstreams.
- Coach, mentor and develop quality professionals and project teams.
- Challenge poor performance constructively and hold stakeholders accountable for agreed actions.
Who we're looking for
We are looking for a credible and resilient leader with the confidence to operate across all levels of the organisation.
You Will Bring
- Experience in quality assurance, quality management, business performance or continuous improvement.
- A background in construction, infrastructure, engineering, consultancy, contracting or oil and gas.
- Experience working within a Tier 1 or Tier 2 contracting environment would be advantageous.
- Strong knowledge of Quality Management Systems and ISO 9001 requirements.
- The confidence and presence to challenge, influence and gain commitment from senior stakeholders.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to translate data into clear actions and improvements.
- Excellent communication, presentation and relationship-building skills.
- The ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and deliver to demanding deadlines.
- A proactive, solutions-focused approach with the resilience to drive change.
- The ability to coach and develop others while creating a collaborative and accountable culture.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
Start with a chat, not a search bar
Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
