Role Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Head of Risk and Compliance to join the firm's Risk and Compliance Department, which comprises two collaborative sub-teams: the Onboarding Compliance Team and the General Risk & Compliance Team.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Compliance (MLRO & MLCO), the successful candidate will work closely with the Director of Compliance to support the firm's governance, risk, and compliance framework.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Director of Compliance and manage the general risk and compliance department that provides support to the governance, risk, and compliance function of the firm whilst line managing and contributing to the wider responsibilities of the department and strategic priorities of the firm.

This role requires strong leadership, outstanding communication skills, and a proactive approach, together with the ability to adapt and thrive within a dynamic and evolving environment.

  • Lead, support, and develop team members to ensure a high level of professional expertise fostering a collaborative, high-performing, and supportive culture.
  • Oversee the effective management of the shared compliance inbox, ensuring that processes for client and matter onboarding requests are operating efficiently, consistently, and in line with regulatory and firm requirements whilst having regard to agreed escalation procedures.
  • Work collaboratively across the department to ensure a seamless approach to service delivery. Adopt an 'all hands-on deck' approach during periods of peak demand to maintain efficiency and service standards.
  • Overall responsibility for projects designed to strengthen the onboarding/gatekeeping function and improve the client and matter onboarding process, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements and firm-wide compliance priorities.
  • Act as the 'first port of call' for queries on AML CDD, source of funds, and related concerns and work collaboratively with the team in dealing with queries on general risk and compliance matters and escalate where required and in accordance with the firm’s governance structure.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and review of compliance policies, procedures, and controls, ensuring they remain effective and proportionate.
  • Deliver training and support to other team members and to the wider firm including participation in firm-wide presentations and awareness-raising exercises.
  • Oversee central compliance registers, preparing management information and reporting to support effective governance and decision-making.
  • Build trusted and collaborative working relationships with partners and colleagues and engage professionally and responsively with clients and external parties.

Personal Attributes and Skills

  • Relevant experience in compliance and risk management and leading and line managing a team is essential. Prior experience in law firms or other similar professional services businesses is highly desirable.
  • A legal qualification or relevant professional compliance qualification would be advantageous but is not essential. Undergraduate degree required, preferably in law or a related discipline.
  • A high level of professional competence, rigour, and judgment combined with a commercial and pragmatic understanding and approach.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally and to build credibility at all levels in the business.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of money laundering regulations and professional obligations in the legal or financial sector.
  • A personable, collaborative, and team-focused mindset, with the ability to develop strong relationships across all levels of the firm.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize competing demands and make effective judgements and decisions in a fast-paced environment.
