Blackfinch Group is looking for a new Head of Risk to join our Compliance team, on a hybrid contract, with time spent in our impressive offices in Elkstone, Gloucestershire.
The Head of Risk is responsible for developing the business's enterprise risk management framework ensuring it is built for evolution and adaptation. The business aims to raise its assets under management (AUM) from £1bn to £4bn over the next 4 ½ years which will attract additional strain, resource pressure, complexity, and risk. The role ensures that strategic, operational, financial, regulatory, and reputational risks are identified, assessed, monitored, and managed effectively to support the achievement of the business’ objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Risk Management Framework
- Develop and maintain the organisation's risk management strategy, policies, and procedures.
- Ensure alignment with regulatory requirements, industry standards, and corporate governance expectations.
- Promote a strong risk-aware culture across the organisation.
Risk Identification and Assessment
- Lead enterprise-wide risk assessments and horizon scanning activities.
- Identify emerging and evolving risks that could impact business objectives.
- Maintain and oversee the corporate risk register.
Risk Monitoring and Reporting
- Develop and monitor key risk indicators (KRIs) and risk appetite metrics.
- Prepare high-quality risk reports for executive management, committees, and the Board.
- Provide insight and recommendations on material risk exposures and mitigation plans.
Governance and Compliance
- Support the Board and senior leadership in fulfilling their risk governance responsibilities.
- Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and industry requirements, including, but not limited to:
- Development and delivery of the annual ICARA
- Completion of required regulatory reports
- Continually monitor the firm’s adherence to regulatory requirements relating to both liquidity and capital adequacy.
- Liaise with regulators, auditors, and external stakeholders where required.

Control Environment
- Assess the effectiveness of internal controls and risk mitigation strategies.
- Work with business leaders to address control weaknesses and implement improvements.
- Oversee risk and control self-assessment (RCSA) activities.
Business Continuity and Resilience
- Lead the development and testing of business continuity and crisis management frameworks.
- Ensure organisational resilience against operational disruptions and emerging threats.
Leadership
- Provide guidance and support to senior stakeholders on risk-related matters.
- Champion a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement.
Skills & Experience
We are looking for someone who has worked in a more scaled organisation and who was actively part of a firm’s growth journey, having learned the lessons from such growth and understands how to scale the risk measures proportionally.
Essential
- Significant experience in risk management, governance, compliance, or internal audit within the financial services regulated industry.
- Strong understanding of enterprise risk management principles and frameworks.
- Experience presenting risk information to executive committees and boards.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Proven ability to influence senior leaders and drive organisational change.

Desirable
- Professional qualifications such as:
- IRM (Institute of Risk Management)
- ICA (International Compliance Association)
- CISA, CIA, CRISC, or equivalent
- Relevant degree or postgraduate qualification
