Head of Safeguarding – Strategic Leadership Role
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced and inspirational Head of Safeguarding to lead the delivery of outstanding safeguarding practice across our organisation.
This is a high-profile, strategic leadership role, where you will work closely with the Chief Nursing Officer and wider Quality team to ensure statutory safeguarding requirements are met while continuously improving outcomes for the people we serve.
Key responsibilities include:
- Shaping our safeguarding strategy
- Driving a culture of continuous learning
- Ensuring safeguarding is embedded across every level of the organisation

About the Role
As Head of Safeguarding, your primary responsibilities will include:
- Expert leadership and oversight of safeguarding across adults and children’s services
- Strategy and improvement leadership by developing and implementing safeguarding policies
- Robust governance, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance across all safeguarding functions
- Data-driven decision-making to analyse safeguarding incidents, identify risks, and recommend improvements
- Collaborative partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to promote best practice
- Senior representation in safeguarding forums, partnerships, and governmental-level discussions
While this role does not require direct line management, you will:
- Provide regular 1:1 engagement and professional support to nine Safeguarding Leads across the organisation
- Foster capability development to ensure consistent, high standards of safeguarding
What We’re Looking For
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Registered Nurse (NMC) or Allied Health Professional (HCPC)
- Relevant degree and postgraduate qualification at Master’s level (or equivalent experience)
- Senior-level safeguarding leadership experience (e.g., Head of Safeguarding, national-level roles)
- In-depth knowledge of safeguarding requirements for adults and children
- Leadership/management qualification
- Proven experience in influencing safeguarding at strategy or national levels
- Strong expertise in safeguarding governance, quality assurance, and continuous improvement
- Evidence of ongoing professional development in safeguarding

- A systematic understanding of the safeguarding framework, including organisational, partnership, and statutory roles

- Excellent communication skills, especially in handling sensitive and complex information

Working Arrangements
- Primarily remote (can be based anywhere in the UK)
- Ad hoc travel to services and business units as required

- Salary: £79,504 - £91,609 (Band 8c AfC Salary) Includes NHS Pension and full Agenda for Change terms
