Head of Sales – Distribution Transformers

An exciting opportunity to join an established, family-owned business in Leeds as Head of Sales – Distribution Transformers. This newly created role will drive continued business growth, lead a high-performing sales team, and develop strategic customer relationships across the UK and beyond.


The Role

Reporting to the Sales & Commercial Director, the Head of Sales will develop and deliver the company’s sales strategy, achieve agreed objectives and KPIs, and exceed sales and revenue targets. This is a home-based role with regular travel to customers, the Leeds head office, and occasional international trips.


Key Responsibilities

Sales Leadership

  • Develop and implement strategic sales plans for T2 & e4 Distribution Transformers, including Small and Medium Power Transformers.
  • Lead execution of sales targets, pipeline objectives, and KPIs.
  • Support Regional and National Sales Managers with hands-on leadership across the entire sales cycle (from lead generation to new business securing).
  • Review and approve customer visit plans to maximise sales opportunities.
  • Promote best practices for CRM system adoption across the sales team.
  • Forecast sales performance using market and business data, setting realistically ambitious targets.
  • Build and negotiate long-term strategic partnerships with key customers.
  • Grow both buying accounts and introduce new customers, expanding into new markets.
  • Monitor competitors, market trends, and industry developments to maintain competitive advantage.
  • Develop and implement new initiatives to drive business growth.
  • Ensure sales processes and best practices remain consistent across the team.
  • Address barriers to new business wins and support opportunity conversions.
  • Monitor strategic account plans to align customer objectives and growth plans.
  • Follow up on marketing-generated leads and convert them into sales opportunities.
  • Provide monthly sales performance reports to the Sales & Commercial Director.
  • Chair and attend relevant sales meetings, delivering leadership, direction, and practical solutions.
  • Conduct weekly sales calls to share updates, best practices, and market insights.
  • Prioritise effectively between urgent operational issues and long-term strategic objectives.
  • Act as a passionate brand ambassador for the company, promoting sustainability and environmental credentials.
  • Represent the business at exhibitions, customer events, CPD presentations, and industry conferences both in the UK and internationally.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Build strong relationships with Sales, Engineering, Marketing, and Commercial teams to drive collaboration and improvement.
  • Work closely with customers to understand evolving needs, identify new opportunities, and strengthen long-term partnerships.
  • Adjust the sales approach to ensure product category targets are met.

People Leadership

  • Provide direct line management of the sales team.
  • Lead, coach, and develop individuals to achieve peak performance and engagement.
  • Clearly communicate team objectives, aligning roles to overall business success.
  • Conduct regular one-to-ones and performance reviews against agreed targets.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and high performance.

  • A proven technical sales background, with no less than 10 years’ experience, ideally in the electrical power supply sector or technical manufacturing/supply.
  • Experience at a senior sales leadership level.
  • A track record of consistently achieving and exceeding sales targets.
  • Strong relationship-building, negotiation, and commercial skills, with a passion for closing new business.
  • Previous departmental budget management experience.
  • Exceptional leadership and people management abilities, with the ability to inspire and develop high-performing teams.
  • Strong business acumen and confident decision-making.
  • Outstanding communication and presentation skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • A proactive and forward-thinking mindset.
  • Flexibility for extensive travel across the UK, with occasional international travel.

Desirable but not essential:

  • Experience with transformers (LV or HV switchgear OEMs particularly encouraged).
  • An HNC or HND in Electrical Engineering.

Indispensable qualities:

  • A customer-focused mindset.
  • A professional and enthusiastic approach.
  • A full UK driving licence.
