Head of Security Operations

Head of Security Operations United Kingdom (Partner-Mediated Recruitment)

The partner company is seeking a senior executive to lead a world-class Security Operations programme for a globally distributed technology business.

This visionary role will define, deploy, and scale a cybersecurity strategy, architecture, and execution designed to safeguard critical infrastructure, internal systems, and software pipelines. With responsibilities spanning incident response, threat detection, and security architecture, this leader will ensure security best practices across engineering processes and resilience-driven innovation.

The environment is collaborative, open-source-focused, and heavily automation-enabled, blending technical expertise with strategic leadership to accelerate industry-wide open-source security transforms.


About the Role

  • Harnessing deep technical depth for a globally distributed, high-velocity infrastructure
  • Driving innovation in incident response, while fostering engineering and multidisciplinary collaboration
  • Elevating industry standards through threat intelligence and open-source outreach

Key Responsibilities

Strategic & Operational Leadership

  • Lead the scaling and transformation of a high-performance SecOps team (engineers, analysts, and operations)
  • Align security standards with business objectives, including incident response playbooks, tabletop exercises, and threat modelling
  • Define, manage, and improve SOC capabilities, including automated threat detection, logging, and response systems

Incident Management & Threat Mitigation

  • Own end-to-end incident response for advanced cyber threats, including nation-state actors and APTs
  • Revolutionise remediation workflows through automation, playbook-driven planning, and resilient defence mechanisms

Tooling & Architecture

  • Curate a scalable security toolkit, ensuring adherence to NIST CSF, MITRE ATT&CK, and modern cloud/TIER-3 SOC frameworks
  • Optimise Linux workflows, network segmentation, and defence-in-depth roadmaps for resilience

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Embed security guardrails into DevOps workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and engineering practices
  • Take ownership of risk-based reporting for executive decision-making, including post-mortems and KPI tracking

Industry Contribution

  • Foster open-source security innovation, and shape threat intelligence sharing through publications and community dialogues

Requirements

Technical Expertise

✅ Proven SOC leadership with hands-on experience architecting, monitoring, and automating security operations at scale ✅ Exceptional incident hands-on experience, including military-level or large-scale enterprise threat investigations ✅ Seasoned Linux and distributed systems security (e.g., logs, real-time threat telemetry) ✅ Vet of advanced detection frameworks (custom detection rules, anomaly analysis, automation) ✅ Deep understanding of security controls, compliance, and modern risk management tools (Sumo, Splunk, Datadog) ✅ Proficient in security framework adoption (NIST CSF, MITRE, OCTAVE, ISO 27001)

✅ Team scaling expertise – scaling SecOps processes from small tight-knit teams to international functional groups ✅ Executive communication – bridging geographically distributed stakeholders with technical clarity ✅ Open-source & innovation mindset – bringing fresh perspective to collaborative cybersecurity practices

Academic Background & Language

✅ BSc/MSc in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline (or w/. equal practical experience) ✅ Advanced proficiency in spoken/written English (critical for working with global teams)
