Map Room is seeking to engage with Senior Credit Risk Professionals for an interim position. The primary focus of this role is to lead the first-line credit risk function in SME lending. This includes ensuring complete ownership of the credit strategy, which encompasses acquisition, underwriting, portfolio performance, and decisioning architecture, all aimed at delivering sustainable growth, strong risk-adjusted returns, and regulatory compliance. This is initially a 6-month contract opportunity.

About the Role

  • Define and oversee the first-line credit risk strategy in SME lending, aligning risk appetite with growth ambitions, capital efficiency, and profitability targets.
  • Manage the roadmap for credit decisioning transformation, including next-generation decision engines, credit risk models, customer journeys, and data capabilities.
  • Drive innovation in decisioning through advanced analytics, automation, and digital capabilities.
  • Optimise credit decisioning frameworks, including policies, scorecards, affordability models, and manual underwriting approaches for both acquisition and ongoing customer servicing.
  • Act as the Senior Relationship Owner for key third-party credit data and decisioning providers (e.g., Experian), focusing on performance, commercial aspects, and strategic alignment.
  • Maintain scalable, resilient, and future-proof credit architecture and platforms.
  • Act as a senior leader, shaping enterprise-wide credit strategy, product design, and customer propositions as necessary.
  • Provide clear leadership across underwriting, portfolio management, modeling, and credit decisioning/strategy functions.
  • Hold accountability for credit performance throughout the lifecycle: originations, account management, line management, collections, and recoveries.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
