Head of STEM
Head of STEM – Cardiff, Cardiff International Study Centre

Salary: Up to £43,997.57 per annum

About the Role
The Head of STEM will provide strategic leadership and vision to deliver high-quality student success through teaching, learning, assessment, and curriculum innovation in Science, Technology, and Mathematics (STEM). You will ensure quality assurance and enhancement by fostering outstanding collaboration with Cardiff University and the Study Group network.
This role involves:
- Leading and supporting a team of STEM tutors to deliver Life Science, Physical Science, Engineering, and Computing modules to excellence.
- Reporting to the Director of Campus Operations, balancing contractually required progression rates with compliance and consistency across Cardiff University and Study Group.
- Managing a small-to-medium academic department with experience in:
- Curriculum oversight
- Direct report supervision
- Robust quality assurance processes
The ideal candidate brings holistic academic leadership, a strong collaborative approach, and experience in stakeholder relationships to improve student outcomes and enhance the student experience.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Leadership
- Collaborate with the Director of Campus Operations to define and execute an academic vision aligned with Study Group’s Vision 2025/6 strategic goals.
- Develop programme and student experience strategies to meet institutional objectives, ensuring excellence and high-performance progression rates.
- Contribute to policy development in:
- Human resources
- Academic development
- Learning, teaching, and assessment
- Quality assurance enhancement
2. Academic Leadership & Management
- Leadership of STEM academic teams, ensuring high standards in learning opportunities, assessment accuracy, and curriculum compliance.
- Staff Management responsibilities, including:
- Recruitment planning
- Regular meetings with tutors
- Representation at internal (CUISC, University) and external review bodies
- Attendance and active participation in University Partnership Boards and Committees.

3. Quality Assurance & Enhancement
- Overseeing academic standards, learning quality, and curriculum documentation per Centre, Provider, and University policies.
- Supporting curriculum action plans, Quality Assurance frameworks, and Annual Monitoring Reports.
- Managing External Examiner feedback, Student Outcomes Plans, and progression target reports.
- Data-driven improvements, including:
- Module evaluations and follow-up actions
- Ongoing programme review and re-approval processes
- Analysis of progression rates, feedback data, and remedial action implementation.
- Collaborating with Cardiff University link tutors to enhance graduate preparedness for HE transition.
4. Operational Leadership & Management
- Contributing to ISC governance through:
- Staff induction processes
- Health and safety policies
- Event organisation (e.g., student induction, open days).
- Timetable and assessment coordination, ensuring efficiency and alignment with University partnership expectations.
- Supporting e-learning development in collaboration with the centre’s e-champion.
- Safeguarding compliance and Safer Recruitment procedures, ensuring all staff are trained.
- Resolving day-to-day challenges while upholding operational effectiveness.
5. Student Monitoring & Compliance
- Ensuring compliance with UKVI regulations via attendance checks, tracking student progress, and recording issues.
- Supporting Student Information System (SIS) reporting while maintaining curriculum outcomes and records.
Requirements
Email: Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (minimum) and postgraduate qualification in a STEM discipline (essential).
- Leadership and management training and experience in a teaching/learning environment.
- Track record of leading a team to achieve high student performance against measurable targets.

Employment & Experience: Desirable
- Post-doctoral qualification in a relevant field.
- International education experience, particularly in UK Higher/Further Education STEM programs.
- Proven success in running complex STEM courses with multiple pathway variations.
- Partnership working experience in UK education.
- Quality frameworks familiarity (e.g., QAA, UK Quality Components for HE).
- Data analysis skills to drive strategy improvements.
