The role

At SSE Energy Markets, we're transforming the way energy is traded.

We're investing in a next-generation Systematic Trading capability that brings together world-class quantitative talent, advanced technology and deep market expertise to create lasting value across GB and European energy markets.

We're looking for an exceptional Head of Systematic Trading to help shape and guide that journey.

This is more than a trading leadership role. It's an opportunity to establish and grow a new capability from the ground up, creating an environment where people, ideas and innovation can thrive.

You'll lead the development of SSE's systematic and algorithmic trading capability, bringing together the platform, people, governance and trading strategies that will support the future of trading performance. You'll help shape investment decisions, guide the evolution of our operating model and play a key role in positioning SSE as a trusted and respected participant in systematic energy trading.

Working at the intersection of trading, technology and analytics, you'll foster collaboration across teams, strengthening connections and creating opportunities to unlock value in new and innovative ways. You'll nurture and develop a high-performing quantitative team, creating an inclusive culture where diverse perspectives are valued, learning is encouraged and people feel empowered to do their best work.

As a senior leader, you'll play a pivotal role in one of the most significant transformations underway in energy trading today. You'll help shape strategic direction, champion responsible decision-making and ensure that safety, wellbeing and strong governance remain at the heart of everything we do.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
