The Role: Head of Tax
As Head of Tax, you will oversee the tax function for Shawbrook and its subsidiaries, ensuring compliance, advising leadership, and driving tax strategy to enhance business impact.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement Group tax strategies aligned with business objectives and risk tolerance
- Manage tax relationships with HMRC, covering:
- Corporation tax
- VAT
- PAYE systems
- Annual returns compliance
- Oversee tax return preparation, computations, and payments, guaranteeing accuracy and timeliness
- Lead tax compliance and reporting, including accounting, provisioning, and disclosures
- Monitor tax regulations and advisers on legislative changes’ impact on the bank
- Provide tax policy counsel on transactions, projects, and decisions (including:
- Mergers/acquisitions
- Product development
- Capital management)
- Handle tax investigations, audits, and disputes, negotiating optimal resolutions
- Ensure robust tax risk governance controls and adherence to internal frameworks
- Foster collaboration among teams while driving excellence
- Build and strengthen relationships with senior leadership, auditors, regulators, and tax advisors
- Identify tax-analytics tech solutions to enhance HMRC relationships and reporting
About You: The Ideal Candidate
- Qualified tax professional: Recognised tax qualification
- Relevant banking/tax experience: Developed in a leading fintech firm, regulatory environment, or accounting practice
- Proven track record as a tax function leader, delivering high-calibre services
- Deep expertise in UK and international tax laws, with an understanding of financial services
- Commercial acumen: Ability to offer clear, business-critical tax insights
- Exceptional communication: Must influence senior leaders, clients, and external partners
- Integrity and accountability: Drive ethical, efficient tax practices
