Job Description

As Head of Tax, you will spearhead the bank’s tax governance, ensuring compliance, risk management, and strategic alignment with business objectives. This role sits at the intersection of tax expertise and decision-making, requiring you to advise senior management and the board while translating complex tax considerations into actionable insights.

Key Responsibilities

Tax Strategy & Governance

  • Develop and implement the group’s tax strategy and policies, align them with business objectives, and mitigate tax risk.
  • Set and enforce the bank’s tax governance framework, ensuring control over compliance, reporting, and audits.

Tax Compliance & Reporting

  • Oversee all aspects of the Group’s tax relationships with HMRC, including corporation tax, VAT, PAYE, and annual returns.
  • Manage the preparation and submission of tax returns, computations, and payments for the bank and its subsidiaries, ensuring accuracy and deadlines are met.

Advisory & Strategic Support

  • Provide tailored tax advice across business transactions, including mergers & acquisitions, product development, and capital management optimization.
  • Monitor legislative changes and regulatory updates, advising on their impact on business operations and recommending timely adjustments.

Tax Operations & Innovation

  • Lead tax risk management, ensuring alignment with internal controls and external standards.
  • Drive technology solutions to modernise tax reporting and HMRC relationship management, leveraging best practices.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders—including senior leadership, auditors, regulators, and external advisors—to foster seamless communication.
  • Translate tax implications into clear insights for senior management and board-level discussions.

Relationships & Risk

  • Handle tax audits, enquiries, and disputes with tax authorities, pursuing favourable outcomes through project negotiations.
  • Strengthen tax governance without compromising innovation, upholding ethical and sustainable tax practices.

Qualifications & Experience

Core Requirements

  • A qualified tax professional (e.g., ACA, CTA, or equivalent international qualification).
  • Proven banking sector or leading accounting/tax firm experience, preferably in financial services.
  • Strong leadership track record—previously managed a tax function or team, delivering high-calibre solutions.
  • Extensive knowledge of UK and international tax laws, particularly where applicable to financial services or banking.
  • Deep commercial acumen, with strategic thinking to provide actionable tax advice that drives business value.
