Head of Technical – General Merchandise
The Company
A leading General Merchandise retailer is seeking an exceptional Head of Technical to lead and shape its technical function.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a passionate product expert and inspirational leader to define and deliver the technical strategy for a fast-paced, customer-focused business.

The Role
Reporting into the senior leadership team, you will be responsible for leading the Technical function across a broad General Merchandise product portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
- Developing and delivering the company’s technical strategy
- Leading, coaching, and developing a high-performing Technical team
- Driving technical excellence across:
- Product quality
- Safety
- Compliance
- Ensuring all products meet:
- Regulatory standards
- Ethical standards
- Quality benchmarks
- Partnering closely with:
- Category
- Buying
- Product Development
- Sourcing
- Supply Chain teams
- Managing relationships with:
- Suppliers
- Third-party testing partners
- Identifying opportunities to improve:
- Product performance
- Customer satisfaction
- Operational efficiency
- Providing technical leadership and influence across the wider business

The Candidate
We are looking for a commercially minded technical leader who combines strong product expertise with excellent stakeholder management skills.

Ideal Experience & Qualifications
You will ideally have:
- Significant General Merchandise experience (e.g., DIY, Leisure, Toys, Electrical, Home)
- Gained within retail, manufacturing, or sourcing environments
- Deep knowledge of:
- Product compliance
- Safety
- Quality assurance
- Ethical standards
- A proven track record of leading and developing successful teams
