International Trade & SCF Subject Matter Expert – BAFT

About the Role

This critical senior leadership position is the primary subject matter expert responsible for supporting all international trade and SCF-related initiatives of the association.

The role focuses on advancing the goals of the international trade community through:

  • Promotion of thought leadership
  • Development of best practice guidance
  • Policy advocacy and education

Reporting directly to the CEO, this position holds high industry visibility and is essential to the success of the Association (BAFT).

The incumbent will:

  • Directly support and oversee trade-related committees, councils, and working groups
  • Define industry priorities
  • Assess common concerns and opportunities
  • Drive collaborative solutions to advance the interests of the trade industry

The role requires subject matter expertise to synthesize concerns and develop meaningful plans, including:

  • Global policy advocacy
  • Building industry coalitions with local or global industry organizations
  • Developing white papers for BAFT initiatives, partner organizations, and BAFT members for regulatory engagement
  • Supporting trade education, conferences, and workshops
  • Acting as a spokesperson for BAFT in industry forums

Key expertise required:

  • Deep familiarity with financial institutions and non-banks executing trade finance across:
    • Documentary trade
    • Guarantees/standby letters of credit (LCs)
    • Supply chain finance
    • Receivables
    • Structured trade and distribution solutions
  • Knowledge of:
    • Trade finance rules & standards
    • Emerging technology
    • Regulatory concerns
    • The broader trade ecosystem
  • Appreciation of roles played by:
    • Other industry associations
    • Governmental counterparts
    • Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs)
    • Strong working relationships with these entities are highly beneficial

Key Responsibilities

Define and Lead Priority Trade Initiatives for BAFT (50%)

  • Serve as Secretariat for the Global Trade Industry Council and trade committees/workshops
  • Monitor global trade developments, including economic, geopolitical, business, and policy changes
    • Form ad hoc discussion groups and webinars to address industry needs
  • Establish and lead industry committees/councils to address major trade-related issues
  • Provide domain expertise for BAFT, contributing to key initiatives such as:
    • Digitization
    • Financial inclusion
    • Capital/liquidity management
  • Develop and publish industry tools, standards, guidance, and thought leadership papers for wider adoption
  • Monitor emerging technology solutions and serve as a subject matter expert for trade business initiatives
  • Collaborate with external trade entities (e.g., ICC, ITFA, FCI, SWIFT, WTO, Exim Banks, SBA) to exchange relevant information

Lead Trade-Related Advocacy for BAFT (15%)

  • Monitor policy developments and align BAFT positions to address industry concerns
  • Develop policy recommendations in collaboration with members and stakeholders
  • Offer advisory support to policy makers and regulators to clarify the practical implications of policies on trade
  • Engage with global and local policy makers/regulators, submitting official comment letters and supporting direct discussions
  • Act as a trade advocate across regulatory jurisdictions to protection and advance the global trade community on behalf of BAFT

Support Trade-Related Education for BAFT (15%)

  • Contribute to conference planning committees (as needed) to shape thought leadership on trade
  • Partner with events and payments colleagues on the development and execution of the Trade & Payments Conference, ensuring industry-relevant content
  • Work with BAFT’s education team to design programs that align with trade finance industry needs and ensure qualitative excellence

Member Engagement (10%)

  • Ensure active member involvement in:
    • Trade committees
    • Working groups
    • Advocacy efforts
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with potential members—especially senior leaders—strategically important for BAFT’s trade initiatives
  • Collaborate with BAFT’s staff, Board, and Regional Councils to refine member value propositions in trade finance

Industry Engagement (10%)

  • Maintain an awareness of ongoing trade finance initiatives led by external organizations (public and private) and advise members accordingly
  • Foster and sustain relationships with industry bodies and stakeholders to integrate BAFT into relevant initiatives
  • Partner with trade associations to deliver and execute BAFT’s industry-relevant projects
  • Actively contribute to relevant industry workstreams crucial to BAFT’s members and association goals

Qualifications and Requirements

Experience

  • At least 10 years’ experience in trade finance, preferably within:
    • The financial services industry (banks, financial institutions)
  • Hands-on in-depth experience in:
    • Trade products (including documentary trade, documentary credits, open account)
    • Structured trade/export finance solutions
  • Broader understanding of global trade finance operations and market trends

Technical Competencies

  • Strong expertise in trade finance operations
    • Familiarity with credit, risk, compliance, and regulatory frameworks in trade transactions
  • Deep understanding of trade finance product segments
    • Financial liquidity/transactions impact at an institutional level

Soft Skills & attributes

  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, presentations)
  • Proven project management and execution capability in complex trade matters
  • Leadership and maturity to:
    • Manage interactions with committee members, regulators, and external experts
    • Provide guidance on complex industry issues at an executive level
  • Ability to engage bilaterally or multilaterally with an international audience
    • Professionally represent BAFT at global industry forums
