About the Role
The Head of Workshop is responsible for managing all workshop operations, including woodwork, metalwork, and props, ensuring the safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of scenic construction, fabrication, maintenance, and repairs.
This technical leadership role oversees workshop resources, staff, and schedules to support successful production delivery, adhering to the highest standards of craftsmanship, safety, sustainability, and operational excellence.
As a key member of the technical team, the Head of Workshop reports to the Technical Director and collaborates closely with:
- Production Managers (freelance)
- Artistic & Producing Directors
- Designers
- Technical Departments
The role ensures productions are completed on time, within budget, and to artistic and technical standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee scenic construction, fabrication, and repairs across workshops (wood, metal, props).
- Ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality workshop operations.
- Manage team performance, workshop resources, and project timelines.
- Develop and maintain workshop policies aligned with health, safety, and sustainability standards.
- Collaborate closely with designers, production managers, and technical departments to execute production requirements.
- Implement cost-effective solutions without compromising quality.
- Support budget management and supply chain procurement for workshop operations.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative workshop environment.

Minimum Requirements
To be shortlisted, you must demonstrate the following:
- Significant experience in:
- Scenic construction (meta and woodwork)
- Workshop management or theatre production
- Strong leadership and people management skills
- Advanced technical knowledge of:
- Timber and metal fabrication techniques
- Interpreting technical drawings and production documentation
- Thorough understanding of health and safety legislation and safe working practices
- Strong organisational and project management skills, including handling multiple projects and tight deadlines
- Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities
- Commitment to sustainability and continuous improvement

Desirable Skills & Experience
While not mandatory, these attributes will enhance your application:
- Relevant technical or vocational qualifications (e.g., LAMS, CeFd or equivalent in scenic construction)
- Experience managing workshop budgets and procurement
- Familiarity with CAD and digital production tools
- Formal Health & Safety qualification (e.g., IOSH, NEBOSH, or equivalent)
- Experience in a producing theatre or live events environment
