Head Veterinary Nurse

Location: Graylands Cat Clinic, Horsham, West Sussex Hours: 3.5 days per week (35 hours), negotiable for the right candidate Reports to: Clinical Director and Practice Manager Salary: Starting from £36,500 FTE (dependant on experience)

Perfect for a motivated RVN seeking clinical nursing + leadership within mentorship and practice development.

The Role

As Head Veterinary Nurse, you’ll:

  • Partner with Directors and Practice Manager
  • Lead both clinical and operational aspects of the practice
  • Balance hands-on nursing with LUOs, training, policy-making and team-building

The 3.5-day workweek structure provides:

  • 3 days of clinical nursing (all facets of feline care)
  • 0.5 day dedicated to administrative leadership and team coordination

You’ll play a key role in:

  • Maintaining high feline care standards
  • Supporting team growth
  • Guiding the practice’s continued success

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Development

• Lead and support nursing and support teams daily • Be a role model of clinical excellence, professionalism, and compassionate care • Conduct regular one-to-one meetings and support performance development • Ensure adherence to ISFM Cat Friendly and fear-free handling principles • Identify and address team skill gaps through tailored training programs • Support recruitment, onboarding and retention initiatives • Drive nurse-led clinics and consultations • Maintain nursing rota consistency • Foster a supportive, positive team culture

Clinical Nursing

• Provide exceptional feline nursing care ● Rotho tasks: consultations, procedures, diagnostics, inpatient management, anaesthesia • Uphold best-practice standards in feline medicine • Ensure clinical protocol compliance, health and safety standards • Advocate for the cat-friendly, low-stress approach

Practice Growth & Operational Support

• Collaborate with Clinical Director and Practice Manager on strategic practice expansion • Initiate client care, experience and operational efficiency improvements • Streamline nursing workflows and clinical processes • Embed the signature practice value proposition into client interactions • Assist with stock management, equipment maintenance and resources • Manage Vet Nurse, Cat Care Assistant and Client Care Assistant rotas

Essential Requirements

• Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) • Veterinary team leadership+line management experience required • Strong clinical skills in:

  • Anaesthesia
  • Hospital care management
  • Consultation mechanics • Stunning communication and interpersonal skills • Dedicated team mentoring and development orientation • High organisational + time-management proficiency • Commitment to patient/experience excellence • Adaptive problem-solving and independent action proactiveness

Desirable Requirements

• Preferable: History in feline-focused or cat-friendly clinics • Additional certifications or qualifications in advanced feline nursing • Interest in young business ownership or practice development
