Health and Safety Compliance Officer

Health and Safety Officer (Facilities & Environmental)

Location: Bournemouth, Christchurch and Pool Civic Centre Contract: 6 months Salary: £21.27 per hour (Umbrella rate)


NEBOSH certification required


About the Role

We're looking for a proactive and knowledgeable Health and Safety Officer to help ensure a safe working environment across BCP Council.

In this role, you'll:

  • Support the Council in meeting its health and safety responsibilities by providing practical advice.
  • Carry out inspections, risk assessments, and incident investigations.
  • Help services develop and implement safe working practices.
  • Work across multiple Council services to foster a positive health and safety culture.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Provide practical health and safety advice to Council services and maintained schools.
  • Respond to health and safety enquiries and investigate concerns and complaints.
  • Conduct workplace inspections, audits, and risk assessments.
  • Investigate accidents and incidents, identify root causes, and recommend preventive improvements.
  • Deliver health and safety training and awareness sessions.
  • Support managers in implementing safe systems of work.
  • Assist in reviewing and updating health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports for compliance and continuous improvement.

Essential

  • A Level 4 qualification (or equivalent) in Health and Safety or a related subject.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate or Diploma (required).
  • Strong knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience in carrying out inspections, risk assessments, and audits.
  • Background in supporting health and safety management within an organisation.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain requirements clearly.
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Practical, solutions-focused approach with detailed attention.
