Health and Safety Lead – Preston

Preston – Home to our Manufacturing since 1866

About the Role

The Health and Safety Lead is responsible for leading and driving continuous improvement in health, safety, and environmental performance across Preston’s manufacturing, warehouse, and distribution facilities. The role focuses on:

  • Supporting the development and implementation of the Company’s HSE strategy
  • Translating strategic objectives into effective site-level programmes
  • Promoting a positive safety culture, ensuring legal compliance, and contributing to operational excellence

In collaboration with operational leaders, this position requires advice, coaching, influencing, and support to embedd best practice at all levels, while managing HSE-related CAPEX and OPEX budgets.


Core Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Improvement

  • Lead and drive continuous improvement in Health, Safety and Environmental performance across Preston operations.
  • Oversee the World Class Manufacturing (WCM) Safety Pillar and its implementation.
  • Support the development of HSE improvement plans, translating business objectives into actionable strategies.
  • Coach site managers and team leaders to deliver safety initiatives and foster behavioural change.

Training & Development

  • Design and deliver Health, Safety and Environmental training programmes for staff.
  • Educate on risk assessment methodologies, safe working practices, and emergency protocols.

Risk & Compliance Management

  • Identify, analyse, and eliminate safety losses using structured problem-solving techniques.
  • Conduct and manage statutory compliance audits, implementing corrective actions as required.
  • Maintain ISO 45001 certification through internal audits and liaison with external auditors.
  • Ensure environmental permits and reporting comply with Environment Agency standards.
  • Investigate incidents and near-misses, conducting root cause analyses and implementing solutions.

Stakeholder & External Engagement

  • Advise and guide senior leadership and operational teams on HSE best practices.
  • Liaise with external regulators, including the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Environment Agency.
  • Respond to customer and tender-related HSE enquiries.
  • Support the management of contractors and high-risk activities, ensuring adherence to safety protocols.

Operational Excellence & Continuous Improvement

  • Analyse performance data to identify trends and drive measurable improvements.
  • Lead cross-functional projects to enhance safety, environmental performance, and operational efficiency.
  • Work with the HSE team and wider business functions to share and implement best practice.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Develop and coach the site’s HSE team to ensure alignment with objectives.
  • Build strong working relationships with Production, Engineering and Warehouse leadership teams.

Requirements

Essential

  • NEBOSH Diploma, NVQ Level 5/6, or NEBOSH General Certificate (with extensive manufacturing experience), or equivalent professional qualification.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a Health and Safety Management role within a manufacturing environment.
  • Proven track record in developing and implementing HSE improvement programmes.
  • Strong understanding of UK Health and Safety/Environmental legislation.
  • Ability to influence behavioural and cultural change within organisations.
  • Excellent coaching, communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.

Desirable

  • Experience in World Class Manufacturing (WCM) principles.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing or Continuous Improvement methodologies.
  • Expertise in Root Cause Analysis, Loss Elimination, and Operational Excellence.
  • Experience in data-driven analysis and performance management.
  • Change leadership experience.
