Health and Safety Manager
Salary: £47,578 - £52,457 per annum
Contract: 37 Days (273.8 hours) + 8 Bank Holidays (59.2 hours), including discretionary Christmas closure

The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced and proactive Health and Safety Manager to join our team, ensuring the development of a positive health and safety culture across The Sheffield College.
Reporting to the Head of Health and Safety, the role involves:
- Supporting the delivery of the College’s health and safety strategy
- Overseeing risk management, compliance, and continuous improvement across a diverse estate
- Engaging with specialist environments—vocational workshops, construction zones, animal care facilities, kitchens, laboratories, and multi-site operational areas
The ideal candidate will:
- Provide practical advice, guidance, and support to integrate health and safety into daily operations
- Be a visible presence across the College, fostering collaboration and embedding safety through education and engagement
Key Responsibilities
Health and Safety Management
- Support the Head of Health and Safety in delivering the College’s strategy and health safety objectives
- Act as a trusted advisor for managers, staff, and stakeholders
- Promote a positive health and safety culture rooted in engagement and continuous improvement
- Assist in developing, implementing, and reviewing health and safety policies, procedures, and management systems
- Provide competent, legislatively-compliant health and safety advice

Risk Management & Compliance
- Conduct workplace inspections, audits, and risk assessments across sites, offering improvement recommendations
- Support managers in identifying hazards, assessing risks, and implementing control measures
- Advise on compliance with:
- COSHH
- Asbestos management
- Legionella controls
- Fire safety arrangements
- Contractor management
- Statutory inspections and maintenance requirements
- Monitor health and safety performance data, identifying trends, opportunities, and corrective actions
Incident Management & Investigation
- Investigate and analyse accidents, incidents, near misses, and safety concerns
- Determine root causes and recommend preventative actions
- Ensure proper reporting and escalation where necessary
- Collaborate with managers to embed lessons learned
Training, Engagement & Culture
- Develop, deliver, and support health and safety training, briefings, and awareness programs
- Coordinate coaching and engagement activities to improve understanding of safety responsibilities
- Cultivate strong relationships across academic and support teams
- Promote wellbeing and safe working practices for the College community
Reporting & Continuous Improvement
- Prepare health and safety reports, updates, and performance metrics for senior leaders
- Maintain accurate records, documentation, and compliance evidence
- Assist with internal and external audits, liaising as required with regulatory bodies
- Drive ongoing improvement of health and safety management arrangements
People Management (Direct Reports: Health and Safety Advisor ×2)
Essential Requirements
- NEBOSH Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (or equivalent qualification)
- Proven experience in health and safety roles within complex organisations
- Experience in delivering audits, inspections, risk assessments, and compliance monitoring
- Practical knowledge of health and safety legislation and recognised management systems
- Experience investigating incidents and implementing corrective actions
- Strong communication and influencing skills, with proven ability to engage with all levels of staff
- Proactive mindset capable of managing priorities and delivering practical solutions

Desirable (Bonus)
- NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (or working toward membership)
- Membership or working toward membership of Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH)
- Previous experience in education, public sector environments, or multi-site organisation settings
- Expertise in fire safety, business continuity, or emergency planning
- Experience in promoting wellbeing initiatives
Salary & Benefits
- Salary: £47,578 - £52,457 per annum
