Job Description

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Health & Safety Officer will act as a competent professional adviser, providing expert guidance and support across a complex acute healthcare environment to ensure compliance with statutory requirements and the effective management of risk. The role is responsible for supporting the development, implementation and continuous improvement of the Trust's health and safety management systems, including policy development, risk assessment, audit and inspection programmes, and incident investigation.

The post holder will deliver specialist advice on a wide range of operational and strategic issues, contribute to governance and assurance processes through high-quality reporting, and support the design and delivery of training to ensure staff at all levels understand and effectively manage health and safety risks.

Working as part of the wider Estates & Facilities and Health & Safety team, the post holder will build strong relationships across clinical, corporate and operational services, engaging with managers, staff and external partners to promote a proactive safety culture.

Key relationships include Estates & Facilities leadership, clinical management groups, risk and governance committees, project teams and external regulators where required.

Essential criteria

  • Frequent use of IT equipment for day-to-day work
  • Standard Keyboard skills and daily usage of MS Office Software.
  • Work with minimal day to day supervision
  • Agree development needs for the role in advance and keep key milestones.
  • Drive the requirement purposefully.

Desirable criteria

  • Build Health & Safety Management Agenda
  • Self-motivated to deliver as SME the key messages from the Health & Safety Management Agenda.
  • Provide Stakeholders with status reports proactively

Training And Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Degree level or equivalent knowledge gained through relevant experience.
  • 2 years practical experience of working within a health and safety environment.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable criteria

  • Member of IOSH (or equivalent)
  • NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent Nationally approved level 4 teaching
  • Nationally approved level 4 teaching qualification i.e., City & Guilds 7407, PTTLS.

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Knowledge and experience of Health and safety management systems
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary working
  • Experience of problem solving and communicating findings to key stakeholders
  • Understand and apply information governance principles.
  • Experience of delivering health and safety training to groups
  • Experience of developing training programmes and packages
  • IT skills and experience of using Microsoft office. Working knowledge of data collection, storage, and retrieval systems

  • Able to plan and prioritise own workloads with minimal support and supervision.
  • Ability to manage own time effectively with minimum supervision.
  • Able to work to deadlines

  • Proven track record in developing a message with large groups of colleagues to enable consistent delivery across various workstreams.

The Trust will pay for the check initially and the money will then be deducted from your salary over a three month period commencing on your first month's payment.

The current price of a check is £38 for an enhanced and £18 for a standard check.
