About the Role
If you’re a practising consultant in the field of psychiatry, this highly respected role in healthcare offers you the opportunity to make a major impact on patient safety. This position is flexible, allowing you to continue to meet your current commitments while significantly contributing to maintaining high standards of patient care.
What We Do
We collaborate closely with:
- Doctors
- Physician associates (PAs)
- Anaesthesia associates (AAs)
- Patients
- Other key stakeholders
to support and oversee safe patient care across the UK. We set the professional standards for these practitioners and ensure both they and those who train them meet and achieve these requirements. If concerns arise about breaches of standards or risks to public confidence in doctors, PAs, and AAs, we investigate and take necessary action.

Core Responsibilities
When health-related concerns are raised about a doctor, PA, or AA that could impact their safety to practise, you will:
- Assess their health situation.
- Write a detailed report with your professional opinion on their fitness to practise.
- Monitor their health and progress over a 12-week restricted practice period, including regular check-ins and producing reports at intervals of three to six months.
In fulfilling this role, you might also be required to provide evidence about your findings at Medical Practitioner Tribunals.
Eligibility Criteria
As a credible authority in your field, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be fully registered with a current licence to practise.
- Have had patient contact in the last two years.
- Be in good standing with the General Medical Council (GMC).
- Hold the position of consultant in one of the following specialities:
- General adult psychiatry
- Substance disorder/addictions psychiatry
- Old age psychiatry
- Neuropsychiatry
- Neurology (in some cases)
- Occupational health medicine

- Demonstrate strong analytical skills, as you will assess comprehensive information regarding an individual’s health and clinical performance.
Responsibility Compensation & Support
- You must produce a minimum of four health assessment reports per year.
- A supervention requirement includes supervising at least two doctors annually.
- Full reimbursement is provided for travel and subsistence expenses.
