Job Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Hillingdon School Nursing Team as a Health Care Assistant (HCA). This role is ideal for someone with experience working with children who enjoys being part of a multidisciplinary team, supporting School Nurses and local schools to improve the health and wellbeing of children and young people.
The Hillingdon School Nursing Service operates as one centralised team across three localities: South East, South West, and North. The successful candidate will mainly support the South West locality but must be flexible to work across all areas as required.
The team supports children and young people up to age 19, helping ensure they have the best possible start in life. HCAs play a vital role by providing both clinical and administrative support, assisting School Nurses with safe record keeping, caseload management, and delivering child-centred public health services.
Working independently and alongside School Nurses, HCAs help identify unmet health needs, monitor referrals, and support the delivery of the School Nursing Service Specification and Healthy Child Programme. Responsibilities include carrying out hearing and vision screening for Reception-aged children and delivering the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) for Reception and Year 6 pupils, promoting early intervention and improving health outcomes across Hillingdon.

- Referring children to audiology, optometry, or ophthalmology services where appropriate.
- Maintaining accurate records.
- Completing administrative tasks.
- Collecting and recording data.
- Communicating effectively with parents, schools, and other professionals.
- Supporting School Nurses in delivering health promotion sessions through the Junior Citizenship Programme.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
