Job Overview
PLEASE NOTE THAT WE WILL ONLY ACCEPT APPLICATIONS FROM STAFF CURRENTLY EMPLOYED BY ANEURIN BEVAN UNIVERSITY HEALTH BOARD
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, enthusiastic and highly motivated Band 2, Health Care Support Worker (HCSW), to join our friendly and supportive team at Penhow Ward, Royal Gwent Hospital.
We are looking for staff who have energy, enthusiasm, commitment and drive and who are patient-centred.
- You will have the opportunity to develop your skills under the supervision of our qualified nurses, caring for patients during their rehabilitation and in achieving their discharge with the best possible outcomes.
- The post holder will work under the supervision/guidance of a registered nurse/clinical lead and will work collaboratively with them and the wider multi-disciplinary team (MDT).
- As a HCSW you will be expected to demonstrate a genuine interest in this field of nursing and possess excellent people skills such as communication.
- You will be expected to work as an integral part of our team on the Ward and you will be required to carry out a range of assigned tasks involving direct and indirect care to ensure the delivery of high-quality person-centred patient care.
- We provide care to our patients 7 days a week, 24 hours a day so you will need to have a flexible approach to take part in a full shift system including nights and weekend working, in some areas on a 12-hour shift system or on a three-shift system.
This post is currently advertised at Band 2. The role is under review within the Health Board as part of a national review and may, in future, progress to Band 3 with an updated job description. If appointed, your manager will ensure you are kept informed and will support you through any changes, including discussing relevant training requirements.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
