Fusion: Health Physics Technician – Operational Radiological Protection

About Fusion

Fusion, the process powering the sun and stars, offers one of the most promising solutions for cleaner, carbon-free energy. UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) leads global efforts to realise fusion energy by collaborating with industry and research organisations to advance technological breakthroughs and develop the skilled workforce needed to bring fusion electricity to the grid.

About the Role

As a Health Physics Technician, you will be central to ensuring people, facilities and the environment are protected across UKAEA’s operations. Operating within the Health Physics Group, you will deliver specialist radiological protection and occupational hygiene services, ensuring compliance with:

  • Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17)
  • Regulatory and workplace safety standards

This is a hands-on, high-responsibility role requiring autonomy, decisive judgment, and operational expertise. You will collaborate closely with engineers, technicians, project teams, and other stakeholders to:

  • Manage radiological and beryllium hazards,
  • Support high-risk activities,
  • Respond to safety incidents, and
  • Maintain exemplar safety standards company-wide.

Key Responsibilities

Daily Operational Delivery
  • Conduct routine radiological, airborne contamination, and occupational hygiene monitoring to support safe operations.
  • Provide operational Health Physics advice to:
    • Engineers, technicians, and Responsible Officers in radiological and beryllium-controlled areas.
    • Ensure exposures adhere to As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP).
  • Supervise high-risk activities to maintain radiation safety protocols.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
