Health & Safety and Compliance Officer
Position Type: Full-time, permanent Location: Predominantly based at Clayesmore School (group-wide responsibilities across regional schools) Reports To: Director of Finance and Operations (Clayesmore)
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and proactive Health & Safety and Compliance Officer to lead, manage, and oversee all aspects of health, safety, and statutory compliance across multiple schools within our network.
As the subject-matter expert for health and safety, the successful candidate will ensure a safe, compliant, and positive environment for staff, pupils, visitors, and contractors, while adhering to all legal and regulatory obligations.
Working collaboratively with senior leaders, estates teams, and head office, the role involves:
- Developing, implementing, and continuously improving health and safety systems, policies, and procedures
- Providing assurance to senior leadership, the Board, and external stakeholders through audits, inspections, and clear reporting
- Ensuring full compliance with education sector regulations (e.g., Keeping Children Safe in Education, DBS checks, safeguarding policies)

Key Responsibilities
♦ Health and Safety Leadership and Implementation:
- Develop, review, and maintain comprehensive health and safety policies, risk assessments, and procedures
- Ensure all school premises (Clayesmore and regional sites) comply with UK health and safety legislation (e.g., HASAWA, COSHH, RERA, CFRs)
- Conduct regular risk assessments for classrooms, playgrounds, restaurants, dormitories, and facilities
- Engineer and design safe working environments for staff, pupils, and contractors
♦ Compliance and Auditing:
- Monitor compliance with legal and regulatory requirements (e.g., Fire Safety, Asbestos Management, Noise Directives, Safeguarding Policies)
- Conduct internal and external audits, collate findings, and provide evidence-based recommendations for improvement
- Act as the liaison with regulatory bodies, Local Authority Enforcers, OFSTED, and governmental councils on compliance matters

♦ Emergency Preparedness and Response:
- Maintain and update emergency plans including fires, medical incidents, extreme weather, security threats, and pandemic protocols
- Lead drills and training for staff, supporting their ability to respond effectively in crises
- Provide confident risk assessments and guidance during inevitable safety incidents
♦ Collaborative Support and Training:
- Advise senior leaders on health and safety implications of new or proposed initiatives
- Coordinate with estates teams on inspections, repairs, and construction projects to mitigate hazards
- Deliver staff training programmes on health and safety, safeguarding, fire safety, and general compliance
♦ Documentation and Reporting:
- Store and manage documentation using the school’s health and safety management system
- Maintain transparent, timely records of incidents, inspections, and corrective actions
- Provide concise reports and recommendations to senior management and the Board
♦ Visitors and Contractor Management:
- Assess supplier qualifications, ensuring contractors meet health, safety, and safeguarding policies
- Monitor visitor conduct and parent/guardian compliance during occasions, such as wraparound programmes
Requirements
- Degree-Level Qualification Preferred: In Health, Safety, and Compliance, Environmental Science, Occupational Health, or a related field
- Experience: Minimum 5 years in a health and safety or compliance role, preferably within educational establishments, schools, or diverse facilities
- Technical Expertise:
- Strong commercial awareness of health and safety legislation
- Ability to create clear, concise, and well-formed risk assessments
- Knowledge of audit processes and evidence-gathering frameworks
- Soft Skills:
- Confident and diplomatic ability to communicate with staff, pupils, and external stakeholders
- Influential leadership with senior management and cross-department teams
- Ability to anticipate safety risks and implement preventative measures
