Health, Safety and Environmental Advisor – North of Scotland
About the Role
We are looking for a Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Advisor to join our team and provide ** Health and Safety support** across our North of Scotland region. You will act as the focal point and champion for HSE, working closely with the regional management team and project management teams to continuously improve HSE performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the focal point and champion for HSE, working closely with the regional management team and project management teams to continuously improve HSE performance.
- Provide guidance and ensure compliance with CALA Group Standards, HSE management system, and statutory/legal requirements.
- Actively contribute to the development of the company’s HSE management system and improvement plans.
- Initiate and maintain proactive measures to raise HSE awareness and performance across all departments and contractors.
- Assist in the review of regional H&S training plans (in coordination with Cornerstone) and delivery of HSE-related training.
- Review contractor RAMS (Risk Assessment Method Statements) and attend post-tender and pre-start meetings with contractors.
- Conduct site HSE inspections, coaching & mentoring visits, and client visits in line with business strategy, ensuring any actions arising are effectively closed.
- Visit all projects at least twice a month, performing scored HSE inspections and supporting site teams to maintain high HSE standards.
- Review HSE documentation to ensure compliance with Group requirements.
- Develop and communicate HSE information (board reports, performance reports, bulletins) within the region.
- Ensure all accidents and incidents are reported, investigated, and recorded on the CALA SMS in line with Group standards.
- Maintain strong relationships with enforcement agencies (e.g., HSE, EA/SEPA, EHO) and attend accompanied site visits where required.
- Attend Group and regional HSE meetings, including HSE forums and contractor engagement sessions, providing key HSE updates.
- Support regional teams in pre-construction information compliance under CDM regulations and Group requirements.
- Provide cross-regional HSE support as needed by the Head of HSE.

About You
Technical Qualifications & Certifications
- IOSH (preferably pursuing CMIOSH)
- NEBOSH Construction or National General Certificate (minimum requirement)
- AISEP and ISEP Foundation Certificate in Sustainability and Environmental Management (or equivalent: NEBOSH Certificate in Environmental Management)
Knowledge & Skills
- Advanced knowledge of UK health, safety, and environmental legislation, particularly for the construction industry.
- Ability to build effective relationships across all employee levels, from labourers to senior management.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, adaptable for trainings, presentations, and negotiations.
- Strong confidence in delivering presentations and HSE training.
- Good negotiation skills, self-motivated, and highly organised.
- Ability to prioritise effectively while delivering outstanding customer service.
- Exceptional ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
