The Opportunity

We are recruiting for an experienced CDM / Health & Safety professional to join our team in the Reading office. For this role you have a sound understanding of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 and the role of a Principal Designer. You will support the delivery of CDM Principal Designer and CDM Advisor services across a range of construction projects, providing practical advice to clients, designers and project teams to help achieve compliance and safe project outcomes.

You will be capable of managing projects independently, coordinating CDM activities throughout the project lifecycle and facilitating effective design risk management. Demonstrates confidence in engaging with project stakeholders and promoting the integration of health and safety considerations into the design and construction process

What you need to do to be effective in this role

  • Deliver CDM Principal Designer and CDM Advisor services across a range of projects.
  • Prepare, review and coordinate Pre-Construction Information (PCI).
  • Facilitate design risk management processes and contribute to design team workshops and reviews.
  • Advise clients, designers and project teams on CDM compliance and Principal Designer duties.
  • Undertake site inspections, project reviews and compliance audits.
  • Review Construction Phase Plans and provide feedback in line with CDM requirements.
  • Prepare and coordinate Health and Safety Files.
  • Liaise with clients, contractors, Principal Contractors and design teams to support effective project delivery.
  • Manage individual projects and take responsibility for agreed project deliverables.
  • Support senior team members on more complex, higher-risk or strategically significant projects.

  • Good understanding of CDM Regulations and Principal Designer responsibilities.
  • Effective design risk management and hazard identification skills.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement capability.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple project deliverables.
  • Report writing and technical documentation skills.
  • Competent site inspection and auditing capability.
  • Practical and proportionate approach to risk management.
  • Ability to work independently while recognising when support is required.

Professional Memberships & Qualifications

  • Technical Member of IOSH (working towards CMIOSH)
  • Incorporated Member of APS (e.g. IMaPS)
  • NEBOSH National Certificate (Construction preferred) or equivalent
  • Principal Designer / Design Risk Management training (desirable or working towards)

Knowledge And Experience

  • Good working knowledge of CDM Regulations 2015 and associated health and safety legislation.
  • Understanding of the legal duties and responsibilities of the Principal Designer role.
  • Experience supporting design teams in the identification, assessment and mitigation of design risk.
  • Understanding of design and construction processes across multiple RIBA stages.
  • Proven experience in a CDM, health & safety or construction related role which will be discussed at interview.
  • Experience delivering CDM services across a variety of project types and sectors.
