Position Overview
An exciting permanent Health Visitor role has become available within the Children’s Health Service based in South Ayrshire.
Key details:
- Hours: 37 hours (reducing to 36 from 1 April 2026) — currently 36.00 hrs in North Ayr HC (Monday to Friday, 9:00–17:00)
- Location: Various within South Ayrshire (specific HC details depend on post availability)
- Offer type: Permanent
A UK driving licence is essential for this role.
The Role
This position offers an opportunity to join the SAHSCP Children & Families Health Visiting Team, supporting a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN)/Health Visitor with a designated caseload.
Health Visiting is a diverse, rewarding, and challenging role focused on providing support, advice, and guidance to children and families in the community. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
Core Responsibilities
- Providing a providing a culturally sensitive, safe, person-centred, and effective Health Visiting service.
- Operating as an independent, competent practitioner with in-depth knowledge of:
- GIRFEC (Getting It Right for Every Child) framework and the National Practice Model.
- Caseload management, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of universal and targeted care programmes.
- Manage your caseload to ensure:
- High-quality health visits aligned with national standards.
- Universal Health Visiting Pathway care and additional interventions when needed.
- Offer highly specialist advice, child development assessments, and parenting support (including Solihull Approach).
- Deliver health promotion, psycho-social interventions, and child protection activities.
- Handle complex health visiting cases, such as:
- Child protection issues
- Domestic abuse contexts
- Addiction impacts
- Perinatal illness
- Children with disabilities or life-limiting conditions
- Demonstrate a flexible, strengths-based, change-ready approach, focused on the child and family’s well-being.

Requirements
Essential Criteria
- Must be a Registered Nurse with the NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council).
- Should hold (or be training towards) a post-registration qualification in Health Visiting/Public Health Nursing, with evidence of continuing professional development (CPD).
- Must subscribe to caseload management principles and child protection supervision.
- License-holder: Must have a current full UK driving licence.
Desired Skills & Experience
- Mindfulness, flexibility, and innovation in responding to diverse family and child needs.
- Experience with the following areas:
- Assessing parenting skills
- Child development (using frameworks for benchmarking and interventions)
- Psycho-social health promotion strategies
- Child protection and safeguarding
- Comfort working collaboratively with multiple agencies (e.g. social services, education, voluntary organisations).
