We have an exciting opportunity for a Healthcare Assistant to join the team at HMP Full Sutton, a Category A high-security prison located in Pocklington, York. HMP Full Sutton has capacity for around 600 men and houses those serving long-term sentences.

This role sits within our Primary Care team, where you will support with clinics, work with pharmacy and respond to emergency situations — no two days are ever the same!

Every healthcare assistant takes responsibility and ownership of a specific area (social care, bloodborne viruses, health promotion, etc.), allowing you to become a subject matter expert (SME) while learning about all areas of healthcare!

Hours

This position is full time (37.5 hours per week) on a 4-week rolling rota basis. You will work:

  • 1 weekend per month
  • 2 x main shifts
  • 2 x long shifts

Shift timings:

  • Main: 7.5 hours, 7 AM to 7:15 PM
  • Long: 7 AM to 7:15 PM (no night shifts)

Salary

Annual salary: up to £29,723 per annum Candidates must have a legal right to work in the UK; offers are subject to additional vetting and security checks.

Responsibilities

As our new Healthcare Assistant, your duties will include:

  • Deliver exceptional care to patients both in the healthcare department and on the wings
  • Assist with the implementation of clinical care packages, phlebotomy, assessments, treatments, and evaluations
  • Support the primary care nursing team with all aspects of care, including ** Phlebotomy (venepuncture)**
  • Support clinics, including blood tests, ECGs, and weight checks
  • Assist with second receptions (new prisoners on their fifth day at the site) alongside the registered nurse
  • Act as a second checker in pharmacy where required
  • Primarily work within the primary care team but may also assist in the substance misuse team as needed

What You’ll Need

Ideal Qualifications & Experience

  • NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health & Social Care or equivalent Care Certificate
  • Phlebotomy experience (highly desirable)
  • Clinical care experience, ideally from hospital or prison settings
  • Experience with venepuncture, ECGs, or other diagnostic procedures
  • A non-judgemental and compassionate approach
