Healthcare Assistant

Job Overview

The Integrated Care Assistant (Band 3) works within inpatient care services to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care within hospital settings such as wards and inpatient units. The role supports nurses and therapists by carrying out delegated clinical, rehabilitation, and personal care tasks, contributing to the assessment, implementation, and evaluation of care plans.

Working under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Ward/Team Lead, the post holder plays a key role in promoting recovery, independence, and dignity for patients, while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated and effective inpatient care delivery.

Main duties of the job

  • Deliver holistic care to patients within inpatient settings, promoting recovery and independence.
  • Carry out delegated nursing, rehabilitation, and therapy tasks under supervision.
  • Monitor patients’ physical and emotional wellbeing and promptly report changes.
  • Maintain accurate and timely patient records using IT systems.
  • Support patients, families, and carers through education and advice on health and care needs.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary inpatient teams.
  • Follow Trust policies, including safeguarding, infection control, and risk management.
  • Participate in audits, service improvement, and clinical governance activities.
  • Assist in training and supporting new staff and students.
  • Maintain and develop clinical skills through training and professional development.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care within the inpatient setting, including personal care and clinical interventions in line with competency.
  • Assist in care planning, implementation, and evaluation alongside registered professionals.
  • Act as a patient advocate, ensuring dignity, privacy, and respect are maintained at all times.
  • Observe and report changes in patients’ conditions, behaviour, or wellbeing.
  • Escalate concerns promptly to the Registered Nurse or Ward Manager.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date clinical documentation and records.
  • Communicate clearly with the multidisciplinary team regarding patient care and progress.
  • Contribute to a positive and supportive ward environment.
  • Work collaboratively with nurses, therapists, and other healthcare staff.
  • Adhere to Trust policies on patient safety, safeguarding, infection prevention, and manual handling.
  • Report incidents, near misses, and safeguarding concerns appropriately.
  • Participate in audits, quality improvement initiatives, and governance processes.
  • Maintain accurate patient records using electronic systems.
  • Support ward organisation, including stock control and equipment checks.
  • Ensure confidentiality of all patient information at all times.
  • Monitoring physical health observations e.g Vitals, CBG, Urinalysis, Weight, Height.
  • Participate in mandatory training, supervision, and appraisal.
  • Maintain and develop clinical competencies relevant to the role.
  • Work within scope of practice and competency framework.
  • Demonstrate professional behaviour aligned with Trust values.
  • Use resources efficiently and contribute to service improvements within the inpatient setting.

Starting with NELFT

NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop-in sessions focusing on engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Goodmayes, Essex.

Probationary Period

This post will be subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from the probationary period (unless you are an internal applicant currently part way through a probationary period or currently a bank member of staff).

High Cost Area Supplement Outer London (B&D, Redbridge, Havering and Waltham Forest, CEME)

This post also attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (with a minimum of £4,714 to a maximum of £5,941 p.a. pro rata for part time).
