Full Time - 37.5 hours per week
Priory Hospital Middleton has an opportunity for a Healthcare Assistant to join our team.
Set in spacious and relaxing grounds, Priory Hospital Middleton St George, located in Darlington, County Durham, is a specialist inpatient service for adults with mental health issues, complex needs and behaviours that challenge. We are dedicated to supporting people to transfer effortlessly between the most appropriate care, meeting individual needs, enabling recovery and re-engagement within the community, and maximising life opportunities.
We accept referrals from a wide variety of public sector organisations throughout the UK, including special hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, prisons, courts, low secure units (LSUs), medium secure units (MSUs), forensic lead commissioners, social services, NHS Mental Health Trusts, GPs, the police and others.
What you'll be doing
- You will be part of a compassionate team who are committed to our patients wellbeing.
- We take a personalised approach, using proven therapies to help people move forward with confidence and build a healthier, more fulfilling future.
- You will play a key part in their recovery, assisting qualified staff with the assessment and implementation of individual patient care plans, undertaking routine tasks and activities as directed or delegated to facilitate wellbeing, dignity and treatment of patients.
- Support Registered Nurses in delivering high-quality, person-centred care to patients within a mental health inpatient setting.
- Assist patients with daily living activities, promoting dignity, independence and wellbeing at all times.
- Observe, monitor and report changes in patients' physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, escalating concerns where appropriate.
- Build positive therapeutic relationships with patients, families and the wider multidisciplinary team to support recovery.
- Contribute to maintaining a safe, clean and therapeutic ward environment, ensuring compliance with infection control, safeguarding and health and safety standards.

What you'll bring to the role
Essential for the role
- A caring, compassionate and patient-focused approach to supporting people with mental health needs.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with patients and colleagues.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Good observational skills, with the confidence to recognise and report changes in a patient's wellbeing.
- Understanding of confidentiality, safeguarding and person-centred care.
- Basic IT skills and accurate record-keeping.
- Flexibility to work shifts, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
The following experience would be beneficial
- Previous experience working as a Healthcare Assistant, Support Worker or Care Assistant.
- Experience within a mental health, learning disabilities or healthcare setting.
- An NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health & Social Care (or equivalent).
- Experience supporting individuals with complex mental health needs or behaviours that challenge.
- Knowledge of de-escalation techniques or PMVA/MAPA training.
- Experience working within an inpatient or residential care environment.
- Familiarity with electronic care records or healthcare documentation systems.
