Healthcare Assistant – Day Ward (Bank) @ York Hospital

Role: Healthcare Assistant (Day Ward) Location: York Hospital Hours: Bank (ad-hoc basis, including very occasional weekend shifts) Daily Rate: Up to £13/hour (depending on skills/experience)

Nuffield Health, the UK’s largest Healthcare Charity, is committed to delivering exceptional patient care with the highest standards. We’re looking for a dedicated Healthcare Assistant to join our Day Ward team at York Hospital.


About the Role

As a Healthcare Assistant on the Day Ward, your primary focus will be supporting patients pre and post minor surgical procedures, including:

  • Cataract surgery
  • Endoscopy
  • Minor local anaesthetic procedures
  • Pain clinics
  • Varicose vein surgery

The ward operates Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM, with occasional Saturday cover. This is a banking role, meaning you’ll work flexible shifts as required, rather than a fixed contract.

The Day Ward provides cutting-edge care with a focus on recover, rehabilitation, and wellbeing. You’ll contribute to a collaborative, patient-centred environment, assisting a team of Registered Nurses and Consultants to deliver outstanding clinical outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Put patient care first – Ensuring a compassionate, dignified experience for every individual.
  • Assist with administrative duties – Supporting ward operations efficiently.
  • Work closely with clinical teams – Complementing Registered Nurses & Consultants in pre- and post-procedure care.
  • Build meaningful connections – Encouraging rapport with patients and their families.
  • Uphold organisational standards – Managing procedures, records, and communication effectively.

Requirements

You must:

  • Be able to meet deadlines and follow multi-step instructions with precision.
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills, including strong telephone and computer/database expertise.
  • Hold a valid NVQ Level 2 in Health & Social Care (or equivalent training).
  • Have demonstrable experience in an acute hospital or care setting.
