Healthcare Assistant – Day Ward (Bank)
Location: York Hospital | Department: Day Ward | Employment Type: Bank | Shift Pattern: Includes very occasional weekend work
Salary: Up to £13 per hour, depending on skills and experience

As a Healthcare Assistant in our Day Ward, you’ll play a vital role in our mission. You’ll demonstrate the ability to meet deadlines, follow instructions, and deliver exceptional patient care while working alongside a supportive team of Registered Nurses and consultants.
This role requires an individual with strong:
- Telephone manner
- Computer and database skills
- A qualification in NVQ Level 2 in Health & Social Care
- Relevant experience in an acute hospital or care setting
The Role
As a Healthcare Assistant on the Day Ward, you will:

- Put patient care first – Ensure all care is centered around individual needs and experiences.
- Support administrative duties – Help coordinate ward operations efficiently.
- Assist the team – Work alongside consultants to deliver exceptional patient care pre- and post-surgery.
- Build rapport with patients – Have the opportunity to get to know and support individuals during their time on the ward.
- Meet varied individual needs – Tailor care to every patient, from minor procedures to pain management.
- Use organisational skills – Make a positive impact through careful planning and execution.
About the Day Ward
Our newly opened Day Ward provides minor procedures, including:
- Cataract surgery
- Endoscopy
- Minor local anaesthetic procedures
- Pain clinics
- Varicose vein surgery
The ward operates:
- Monday to Friday: 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM
- Occasional Saturdays as required
Shift patterns will vary to meet the needs of the ward, covering a range of working hours.
