Band 6 Healthcare Scientist — Respiratory Physiology (Adult & Paediatric)
About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Band 6 Healthcare Scientist in Respiratory Physiology to join the expanding Respiratory Physiology Service at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT).
This responsible and dynamic role offers a unique opportunity to:
- Develop skills across a broad range of adult respiratory diagnostics
- Support the growing delivery of paediatric respiratory physiology services, including:
- Children and Young People (CYP) pathways
- Community Diagnostic Centres (CDCs)
Ideal for candidates with an interest in paediatrics, enabling them to grow expertise in:
- Paediatric and CYP respiratory physiology pathways
- Experienced community and acute paediatric healthcare settings
- Contribution to the expansion of paediatric diagnostic services
Key Responsibilities
This independent practitioner role involves:
Clinical Duties
- Oversee the daily operation of the diagnostic service, ensuring comprehensive coverage.
- Perform a range of routine and highly complex respiratory tests on adults with varied pathologies within outpatient environments.
- Act as a core practitioner in respiratory diagnostics, applying knowledge to assess, interpret, and document findings.
- Support the development of paediatric respiratory diagnostic services, including exposure to CYP physiology pathways and interventions.

Service Excellence & Patient Engagement
- Promote exceptional patient experiences, particularly engaging effectively with children, young people, and families.
- Ensure data quality by:
- Conducting equipment calibration
- Adhering to quality control procedures in diagnostic tests
Team Development & Training
- Provide supervision, mentorship, and teaching for junior staff and trainees.
- Contribute to trainee support, including Postgraduate Training Programme (PTP) and Scientific Training Programme (STP) initiatives to enhance learning and clinical competence.
