Healthcare Scientist

Laboratory Scientist Role – Colindale Sequencing Laboratory (CSL), UKHSA

Location UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), Scientific Campus, Colindale, London

Job Summary

The Laboratory Scientist will work in the Colindale Sequencing Laboratory (CSL), ensuring the provision of genomic sequencing services to customers, including Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), Sanger sequencing, and fragment analysis using advanced instrumentation and technologies.


About the Role

The successful candidate will contribute to routine and project-based sequencing work while adhering to UKHSA policies and quality standards. This role requires expertise in automated laboratory techniques, sample processing, and quality control.


Key Responsibilities

Core Duties

  • Follow UKHSA protocols, SOPs, and UKAS accreditation standards in all laboratory activities.
  • Perform manual and automated sequencing techniques (NGS, Sanger, fragment analysis) using commercial platforms and liquid handling systems.
  • Support routine molecular service delivery for internal and external customers.
  • Operate NGS and Sanger sequencing platforms independently, including workflow optimization and service development.
  • Manage sample flow from receipt to processing, ensuring timelines and quality standards are met.
  • Conduct routine QC checks for sample preparation, processing, and archiving.
  • Maintain lab equipment, including calibration, troubleshooting, and safety compliance.
  • Oversee stock and reagent management to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Assist in training and supervising colleagues, visitors, and seconded personnel.
  • Collaborate with the Quality Team to maintain high standards, audit compliance, and accreditation requirements.

Communication & Relationships

  • Internal: Engage with Unit Head, CSL staff, and cross-departmental teams for seamless service delivery.
  • External: Liaise with external customers, collaborators, and diagnostic/research labs to support genomic projects.
  • Quality Assurance: Work with the Quality Team to ensure adherence to UKAS, ISO standards, and internal audits.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

✅ A degree (or equivalent) in a biological science, such as:

  • BSc Biomedical Science
  • BSc Microbiology
  • BSc Genetics
  • BSc Molecular Biology
  • BSc Biological Sciences

✅ Demonstrated experience running NGS and sequencing services autonomously without supervision.

✅ Proven expertise in automated liquid handling systems.

✅ Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and compliance requirements.

✅ Strong communication & administrative skills for complex scientific and operational matters.

✅ Problem-solving & adaptability to handle unexpected demands within tight deadlines.

✅ Advanced IT proficiency with database management, software tools, and documentation systems.

✅ Ability to work independently with self-organization and time management in fast-paced environments.

Desirable Criteria

✔ Familiarity with project management principles. ✔ Strong time management and ability to reprioritise workloads. ✔ Report writing & networking skills, with persuasive communication abilities.
