Job Opportunity: Term (Ending January 2028) Occupational Therapist/Healthy Workplace Advisor
Reports to the Manager, Organizational Health & Safety
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Occupational or Physiotherapy Therapy
- Current member in good standing with relevant professional college
- Current CPR and First Aid Certification
- Three to five years of relevant work experience
- Experience in disability management preferred.
- Proficiency in MS Office
- Works by Provincial Acts and other legislation including OH&S, WCB Act, and Human Rights
- Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships both internally and externally
- Knowledge of the following: Body Mechanics (e.g., safe lifting), Risk Management Procedures, Provincial Acts and Legislation, Safe Client Handling Tools and Equipment
- Strong verbal, and written communication and assessment skills
- Adult education experience (an asset)
- Ability to meet expectations of regular and consistent attendance within the corporate standard of 4%
- Ability to demonstrate safe work practices and lift to 44 lbs
- Ability to travel between sites and work outside of regular business hours on occasion.

Major Responsibilities
- Occupational health and safety of employees of Northwood & Shoreham Village
- Facilitates stay at work and return to work initiatives and plans
- Develop injury prevention strategies across the organization
- Completes ergonomic assessments & functional assessments
- Provides support to program area Managers and Staff as a content expert i.e. safe client/resident handling and train-the-trainer.
- Assists with and guides workplace accommodations
Tasks
- Acts as a resource to support Occupational Health and Safety Committees including evidence-based reports and injury analysis reports (incident and WCB reporting).
- Works in conjunction with the co-chairs of the Organizational Health and Safety Committee on external Labour Board Inspections.
- Assists with creating Organizational Health and Safety Action Plan in line with recommendations from the Labour Board, follows up on progress with oversight at the Occupational Health and Safety Committee
- Participated in Occupational Health and Safety Inspections across work location (in conjunction with OH&S Committee)
- Participates in providing WCB/Injury/Incident reports as part of the quality improvement plan Scorecards and board reporting on a quarterly basis.
- Completes ergonomic assessments in offices and department sites and in client homes and provides recommendations.
- Completes coaching sessions with staff in client’s homes as well as on the floors and provides recommendations as needed
- Participates in stay at work/return to work processes including accommodation due to disability, medical limitations.
- Maintains partnerships and liaises with treating health professionals and Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) Case Managers.
- Responsible for WCB case management in work location and will provide cover across all Northwood Sites if needed.
- Responsible for working with WCB on reducing claim costs across Northwood companies in line with the Provincial Return to Work/Stay at work Program.
- Collaborates with outside partners as needed to support employee health (i.e. maintains contact with vendors and OTs in community).
- Develops, implements and evaluates education and awareness programs such as ergonomic assessments, injury prevention and departmental safety training. Assist with policy evaluation and development as required
- Liaises with Aware NS, WCB and other health and safety organizations in relation to best practice initiative and training across the organisation that benefits employees, managers and services.
- Provides advice to managers regarding disability management and occupational health and safety concerns.
- Participates as a member of committees as required
- Responsible for job site analysis and delivers ongoing support to departments across the organization to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant work practices
- Other duties as part of this position may be required depending on operational requirements and changes.

Hours
- 80 hours bi-weekly - 8 Hour shifts
