About the Team & What We Do
The Hearings Support Team administers Fitness to Practise hearings, managing:
- Updates to registers
- Event logistics
- First point of contact to ensure smooth, fair case processing
The Role & Your Impact
As a Hearing Support Officer (HSO), you’ll work autonomously to facilitate hearings—supporting physical hearings in Edinburgh and virtual hearings nationwide.
Key Responsibilities:
- Face-to-face hearings:
- First point of contact for visitors (greeting, directing attendees)
- Delivering exceptional customers service to NMC registrants
- Resolving ad-hoc queries efficiently
- Virtual hearings:
- Providing customer service to hearing parties (ensuring proceedings run smoothly)
What You’ll Bring
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Customer-facing expertise: Proven ability to deliver excellent service, with sensitive handling of candidates
- Communication: Clear verbal and written abilities—able to interact confidently with internal/external stakeholders
- Process Adherence: Following established standard operating procedures with accuracy
- Administrative Prowess: Prior experience in:
- Complex office environments
- Managing spreadsheets & producing attendance logs/statistics
- IT Skills: Proficient in spreading strategic Works (Microsoft 365)
- Stakeholder Prioritisation: Handling high workloads under pressure, balancing competing demands
- Time management: Prioritising tasks to meet service standards
- Confidentiality: Strict adherence to data protection policies
- Self-Direction: Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, using initiative

Flexibility Note:
This is a flexible role—your initial team placement may shift based on workflow demands (to ensure quality service). Movement does not affect your contract terms and will be discussed prior to starting.
