What difference will you make?

Our governors play a vital role in helping New College Durham achieve its mission of transforming lives through education. By bringing independent expertise, strategic thinking and constructive challenge, they help ensure the College continues to provide outstanding opportunities for learners while remaining financially strong, well governed and responsive to the needs of employers and the communities we serve.

As we deliver our ambitious new five-year strategy, our Board will oversee significant investment in people, technology and specialist facilities and the continued expansion of higher technical education. We are also responding to rapid changes in artificial intelligence, digital technology, cyber security and the skills needs of employers.

Governors with expertise in finance will help us maintain our strong financial stewardship while investing sustainably in the College's future. Those with experience of digital innovation and cyber security will provide valuable insight as we strengthen our digital infrastructure, embrace new technologies responsibly and protect the systems and information that support our students, staff and partners.

Whatever your professional background, your contribution will help shape strategic decisions that affect thousands of learners every year, ensuring they have access to high-quality education, industry-leading facilities and the skills needed to succeed in a rapidly changing world.

What are we looking for?

We welcome applicants from a wide variety of backgrounds - people who can contribute their professional and specialist skills to the Board as well as their lived experience of the further education system. We are keen to recruit a diverse Board with a mix of skills and perspectives to ensure effective governance, supportive challenge, sound decision-making and membership that reflects our wider community.

We are currently seeking applications in particular from those with experience in finance, cyber security and digital innovation but we operate in a fast-moving environment and would encourage applications from all individuals with a passion for education whatever their skill set.

What will you be doing?

As a member of the Corporation (Board), you will help shape the future of one of the North East's leading further and higher education institutions. Working alongside fellow governors and the College's senior leadership team, you will contribute to the strategic direction of an ambitious organisation that is transforming lives through education, skills and innovation.

The College is about to launch an ambitious new five-year strategy and is entering an exciting period of growth and development. Major priorities include expanding higher technical education, strengthening partnerships with employers and universities, developing the Advanced Manufacturing Technical Excellence College (AMTEC) as a national centre for advanced manufacturing skills, investing in digital innovation, and ensuring we continue to deliver outstanding outcomes for students while responding to the changing needs of learners, employers and the regional economy.

Our Corporation brings together governors from a wide range of professional backgrounds who work collaboratively to provide strategic oversight, constructive challenge and support. The Board has a strong, positive relationship with the executive team and is committed to continuous improvement, effective governance and maintaining the highest standards of accountability.

In addition to serving on the Corporation, you will normally become a member of one of our specialist committees, where much of the detailed scrutiny takes place. Depending on your interests and experience, this could include Finance & Resources, Audit & Risk, Education, Quality, Curriculum & Students, Search & Governance or Remuneration. As you gain experience, there will also be opportunities to take on additional responsibilities such as Committee Chair, Vice Chair or Link Governor.
