Location: Barnston, Essex

Working Hours: 7:00 am – 17:00 Monday to Friday with flexibility

Reporting To: Transport / Operations Manager

Responsible For: None

Main Purpose/Objectives of Role

The primary responsibilities of our HGV Grab Driver are to safely operate a grab lorry for the collection, transportation, and delivery of aggregates, waste, soil, and construction materials. The successful candidate will ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company policies and road transport regulations.

You will play a key role in ensuring all vehicles remain safe, compliant, roadworthy, and operational at all times.

Key Duties/Responsibilities

  • Operate an HGV grab lorry safely and efficiently.
  • Use the hydraulic grab arm to load and unload materials at customer sites.
  • Deliver aggregates, topsoil, sand, gravel, and other construction materials.
  • Collect waste, muck-away, and recyclable materials when required.
  • Carry out daily vehicle safety inspections and report any defects.
  • Ensure loads are secure and transported in accordance with legal requirements.
  • Complete delivery notes, vehicle check sheets, and other required documentation.
  • Maintain cleanliness and general condition of the vehicle.
  • Comply with all DVSA regulations, Working Time Directive, and Driver CPC requirements.
  • Follow health and safety procedures at all times.
  • Provide excellent customer service and represent the company professionally.
  • Communicate effectively with the transport office regarding schedules, delays, or issues.
  • Assist with general yard or operational duties when required.
  • Maintain safe working practices whilst undertaking your duties at all times.
  • To act in accordance with the company’s Health, Safety and Environmental policies, procedures, and practices highlighting any issues appropriately.
  • Work flexibly and be receptive and adaptable to a changing environment within a fast-expanding Company.
  • Undertake any other reasonable tasks as directed by management.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Valid HGV Class 2 (Category C) or Class 1 (Category C+E) licence.
  • Valid Driver CPC qualification.
  • Digital Tachograph Card.
  • Previous experience operating a grab lorry.
  • Competent in using hydraulic grab equipment.
  • Good knowledge of UK road transport regulations.
  • Strong understanding of health and safety practices.
  • Good communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage daily workloads.
  • HIAB/Grab Loader certification is desirable.
  • Experience within the construction, waste, or aggregates industry.
  • Knowledge of FORS requirements (where applicable).
