About the Role

A great opportunity has arisen for any midwife who wishes to be part of credible dedicated High Dependency Team at Queen Charlotte's Hospital.

It has an excellent maternal medicine service taking referrals from across the region and subsequently many women with highly complicated pregnancies will require their care to be within a dedicated High Dependency. There is multidisciplinary collaboration with other services to ensure high standards of care.

This is an excellent opportunity for midwives who are enthusiastic, motivated and interested in this area of midwifery and wish to enhance their skills and knowledge to provide higher levels of care to sick obstetric women. We provide a 24hr service with midwives who are skilled at caring for the critically ill obstetric woman.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead in the provision of high quality, effective safe midwifery care that is evidence based and woman centred within obstetric high dependency and theatres.
  • Provide supportive and authentic leadership to staff.
  • Demonstrate expert clinical midwifery care within the specialised area of maternity critical care.
  • Manage the clinical environment and oversee the operational management of the high dependency area, theatre and recovery area in collaboration with the Matron and Team Leader.
  • Participate in the weekly maternal medicine multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Ensure compliance with clinical governance framework and that staff are effectively updated with changes to policies and guidelines.
  • Conduct annual appraisals and personal development plans for B5 nurses, and maternity assistants.
  • Lead in developing the HDU service and be actively involved in audit, teaching and supporting junior colleagues.
  • Work within the procedures, policies and guidelines of NMC, and both local and national policies and Guidelines.
  • Ensure good working relationships are upheld within team and all other staff members.

Working Environment

You will be working in a friendly and supportive environment with the opportunity for further education. You will be part of the delivery suite team and therefore will have on occasions the opportunity to maintain normal midwifery, theatre and recovery skills. Support and training will be provided in the form of study days, one to one teaching and in-house workshops by a multi-disciplinary team and lead midwife for HDU.

Requirements

Midwives must have enthusiasm and interest in this area of midwifery and have had experience in caring for the sick obstetric woman or the critically ill adult patient. Midwives should be willing to undertake further study where applicable as well as being flexible with their rota.
