**Fixed Term Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) Role – Compass Learning Centre
About the Role
Job Title: Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) Fixed Term: In the first instance until 31 August 2027 Hours: 32 hours per week, over 5 days (all during term time, including INSET day) Salary scale: Dorset Council Grade 9 (Points 19-25) – Permanent annual equivalent (£23,956 – £27,171 PA; £32,061 – £36,363 FTE PA pending pay award)
Compass Learning Centre is seeking an experienced, qualified Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join our team at Compass Plus, an off-site provision in the Dorset area. Based near Dorchester, this role will involve:
- Planning and facilitating lessons in English, Maths, and Vocational Studies
- Supporting the delivery of outdoor education activities
- Working with young people aged Key Stage 4 (Years 10/11)
- Collaborating with specialist instructors and existing Compass team members
- Addressing the needs of students with a range of complex educational and behavioural needs

This position is fixed-term (initially until 31 August 2026) with a potential to become permanent based on performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Work alongside teachers and education professionals, as well as independently under their supervision
- Support the learning of small, bespoke groups (individualised learning plans included)
- Assess and achieve outcomes based on students’ unique challenges
- Contribute to safeguarding, behaviour management, and inclusion
- Model positive engagement and resilience in dynamic, lively settings
Requirements
Must have:
- **A minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at Grade 4 (**previously C) or above, including English and Mathematics
- Qualified HLTA status
- A passion for working with young people with complex needs and those exhibiting challenging behaviours
Desirable:
- Experience in outdoor education or non-traditional learning environments
- Interest in behaviour management techniques tailored for students with special educational needs
