Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist - Probation Services

Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist (Fixed Term – 0.6 WTE)

Vacancy Introduction

We are seeking a motivated, driven and committed Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust's Children’s Speech and Language Therapy (CSLT) service.

Role Purpose The successful candidate will deliver a 3-day-per-week, 0.6 whole-time-equivalent (wte) service embedded within a Probation Young Adult Hub, collaborating with Probation Practitioners, senior officers, and partner agencies. The role operates within a criminal justice framework, focused on young adults (ages 18–23) subject to statutory supervision, addressing issues of risk, compliance, enforcement, safeguarding, trauma, and disadvantage.

The therapist will integrate speech, language, and communication (SLCN) considerations into sentence planning and intervention delivery, supporting young adults with:

  • Offending-related risks
  • Emotional distress
  • Trauma histories
  • Neurodiversity
  • Communication difficulties

Key Responsibilities

Direct Support & Assessment

  • Provide trauma-informed, psychologically and developmentally appropriate assessments and interventions.
  • Engage with service users who may be ambivalent, resistant, or mistrustful, adapting approaches to build rapport.
  • Use communication expertise to strengthen relationships, enhance communication safety, and stabilise environments.
  • Deliver consultation, training, and reflective formulations for professionals on:
    • How communication needs, developmental trauma, and relational difficulties interplay.
    • ways to adapt environments and expectations for young adults.

Collaborative Work

  • Work alongside Probation Practitioners, Senior Managers, and wider teams to inform legal documents and safety plans.
  • Advise on reasonable adjustments, communication strategies, and environmental adaptations to support compliance, engagement, and safety.
  • Develop conflict-reducing, communication-friendly strategies to foster shared understanding.

Professional Practice

  • Manage professional boundaries and personal safety when working with emotionally complex cases.
  • Embed within Leeds Community Healthcare’s Children’s Speech and Language Therapy service, benefiting from clinical support.
