Main Duties & Responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
- Working within the Head and Neck SLT team, engaging in clinics (SLT-led and MDT), acute wards, and outpatient treatment areas.
- Assessing and treating patients with complex communication and swallowing difficulties linked to head and neck cancer.
- Providing regular instrumental assessment support (e.g., FEES, VF) for patients.
- Representing the SLT service within head and neck oncology, promoting best practices and service improvements.
- Inspiring innovation in patient care and service delivery via collaborating with MDT initiatives.
- Supervising and training less experienced SLTs and healthcare staff, fostering professional development.
- Supporting non-clinical duties, such as student coordination, clinical effectiveness, and audit leadership.

Essential Experience & Skills
To excel in this role, you should have:
✔ Extensive experience working with head and neck cancer patients, particularly managing communication and swallowing disorders. ✔ Proficiency in instrumental assessments, such as flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) or videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS). ✔ Strong supervisory and educative skills to mentor both clinical and non-clinical staff. ✔ Experience in multi-disciplinary team (MDT) settings, representing SLT advocate interests. ✔ Acute hospital experience, navigating complex clinical scenarios. ✔ Proven experience in conducting clinical audits, service evaluations, or relevant research.

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
✅ Degree in Speech and Language Therapy recognised by HCPC ✅ Master’s-level qualification or equivalent professional experience ✅ Active HCPC registration as a Speech and Language Therapist ✅ Demonstrated commitment to continuous professional development (CPD) relevant to head and neck oncology ✅ Specifically trained within head and neck speciality (e.g., postgraduate qualifications/education) ✅ Experience supervising clinical staff ✅ Involvement in training development and delivery ✅ Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly with patients, carers, managers, and healthcare professionals ✅ Clinical judgement skills—balancing practicality, sensitivity, and adaptability in complex cases ✅ Strong interpersonal and rapport-building abilities to support emotional well-being in patients, stakeholders, and colleagues
Desirable Criteria
✨ Membership of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT), including relevant specialist group affiliations. ✨ Experience leading or coordinating audit/research projects in SLT. ✨ Clinical supervisory skills training—furthering professional growth within the team.
